Fake Cigarettes
« on: October 25, 2006, 03:38:07 PM »
Just wondering if anyones ever bought fakes cigarettes cos I bought some lucky strikes yesterday and they just didn't taste right. The packaging was spot on, the only thing which me a bad feeling apart from the taste was that the packet didn't have one of those little tear bits on it.

I'm 90% sure these are fakes but no way to prove it unless I have a lab. Anyone know if theres any home experiments to see what shite I have been sold?

I'm guessing you'd need a lab. take 'em to HM customs?

you'd need something to determine the isotopic percentage of the elements in there (assuming they still contained tobacco, i assume different tobaccos would have slightly different isotopic percentages), or if they were really cr@ppy (i.e. something in there that's not tobacco), you'd need an NMR machine (cost around £500,000), mass spectrometer (at leat £50,000), elemental anaysis (dunno about the cost), and IR (again, probably at least £50,000) wouldn't hurt either, to determine what IS in there instead of the tobacco (or as an impurity).

Not to mention a lab to enable you to extract the impurities.

Unless there's some easier way of which i'm unaware...

yeah. i don't see any simpler way to work out what's in something, though.

I've got a bit of one of them at home.  Maybe we could make one

You could always break them up and make a little pile of baccy.  Then get some real ones and do the same.  Place fakes under a little glass of water and set alight to it.  Measure the temperature rise.  Then repeat for the real one.  Do it a couple of times and if there is noticable difference in the temp rise of the water, there's probably different stuff in there.  Wont tell you what's in it though.  Probably straw and dog poo anyway, so your probably better off not knowing  :P

Oh, I bought some fake yves saint laurent fags about 10 years ago that were fake.  Box was fairly cool though.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Your local Trading Standards are the ones to speak to, as apparently a lot of the fakes have even more poisions than the normal ones.

They usually do an analysis to try and connect other fake brands to the supplier.

^ PMSL? I don't get it... :(

but anyway, I guess different brands/strains of tobacco might have a slightly different isotopic distribution of the carbon in there. I dunno, maybe not. Or even if it's kept for longer after being picked before being put into cigarettes (than the official tobacco), that'd change the isotopic distribution as well.

I hope you guys realise that I've been winging this from the start- it's not a recommendation on how to set up your own CSI lab...

Pissing My Self Laughing.

You can tell a dodgy brand fags by the packaging if your observant enough, thus saving a large wedge of cash on Isotopic analysing machines! Anyway my contraband Golden Virgina comes from a reliable source, not some dodgy chancer in the street. Simple really. Man you have a lot to learn!

Different isotopes taste different?

Are you sure?
