Pickup Suggestion.HELP!
« on: October 26, 2006, 09:40:55 PM »
Hi guys,

i am new here at the forum. I haven't used any BK pups yet so i need your advice. I have a Jackson Jenna Jameson King V and i want to replace the pickups (some cheap Duncan Designed) with a pair of real pups. I play hard/heavy rock up to heavy heavy metal. Apart from the earth-shattering  :D distorted tones i also need good clean sounds. So i was thinking a Warpig in the bridge and a Nailbomb in the neck. Do you agree? Do you think the Warpig would be too much, so a calibrated set of Nailbombs would suit my needs better? Thanks!

The Warpig is quite a brutal pickup. The cleans are very sweet indeed. Distorted it's pretty bass heavy wich makes it perfect for a modern metal tone. When drop tuned, it's an animal.

For the tonal range of heavy rock to heavy metal I think Nailbombs would be better.

There's a lot of choice here, but of the two pickups you mentioned I'd advise either a calibrated Warpig set or a calibrated Nailbomb set rather than mixing the two.  The product page doesn't really make it clear that the neck pickup in a calibrated set is a totally different spec, wound & voiced to work specifically with the bridge pickup.

e.g. The Nailbomb bridge is 16k, but the neck is around 10k (don't have a Nailbomb neck so don't know the exact specs).  In other words, the specs on the product page are for the bridge.

I don't have a Warpig, but do have a Nailbomb bridge.  It's a very versatile, dynamic pickup that cleans up really nicely.  But on the overdrive channel it's an absolute animal  - it doesn't have massively high output, but seems to give the sound a really percussive "cut" that makes riffs jump out of the amp.  You can rock out or thrash out equally well with a NB :)

Aside from the WP & NB, there are a fair few people here who think the Miracle Man is the best metal pickup out there (it is VERY good for fast heavy riffage).  My own favourite is the Holy Diver which is so much more than an 80s rock pickup & capable of some serious brutality

One alternative to calibrated sets is to use the Cold Sweat neck - by all accounts people have matched it with NB or MM bridge & got very good results.
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

ratrod is right...but are great pickup (think he might be saying I ain't subtle*L*), but nailbomb is good alrounder for what your saying and again very good clean, split or distorted

So you suggest that getting a calibrated set of pickups is better than mixing these 2 right? I intend to use to guitar for soloing most of the time (it's a king v :D ) so maybe an 'easier to handle' -in terms of amount of output- pickup would be better? So between the Nailbomb calibrated set and the Warpig calibrated set would you suggest the Nailbomb? Thanks!

I have both warpig(with crawler neck in sg)  and nailbomb(awating some singles in an ibanez)...but only bridge ones...so can't say on either as calibrated sets...but my emeralds(and had cal set of crawlers in sg before) are cal set and yeah do work well as set for volume etc and as cal set are made to work well together
