Which amp?
« on: October 26, 2006, 09:53:28 PM »
Music live is around the corner and i wants a new amp! :D

I currently use a vox DA15 and a marshall MG15MSII. What i'm after is something gig worthy which is preferably all valve, i'm looking for some great blues tone from it (my main axe is a gibbo flying v) but i don't need anything huge, 20watts should be fine.

Main considerations are shifting it around - so either a combo or a head and small cab. good clean sounds that can be dirtied up with a good overdrive pedal (looking to buy a gojitone SD-1 pedal) and dosn't cost the earth.

any suggestions?

laney vc15/30 (there's no 20, unfortunately, you need to decide if you can cope with 10 extra watts, or 5 less, than your ideal amount- though th 30 has a 12" speaker compared to the 15's 10"- that might swing the deal on its own). the lc15 or 30 might be worth a look too, though I prefer the vc (that's preference, though).

Fender blues junior (15 watts).

Peavey classic 30.

I guess a vox ac15 might be worth a try too.

Matamp might make some in that price range, i'm not sure though. If they do, they're worth a look.

remember to try them cranked up too- some that might sound on equal par at low volumes may not be at full whack (*cough* peavey classic 30, laney lc, which both sound less than amazing up full *cough*)

That's about all I can think of off-hand, it's mainly preference as to which you prefer, so you'd ideally need to try them. There are probably some glaring omissions there too, I normally manage to forget the "usual suspects" in any price range.

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe?  Saw a guy gigging recently with one and a Les Paul Studio - he had a great tone.

Hot Rod deluxe and a hotplate should sound pretty good for what you want. People say the clean channel goes really well with overdrive pedals. I've only really used 2 with my HRDx, a Marshall GV-2 (sounded ok, boring after a while) and currently a Keeley Rat, which sound quite nice for blues through it. However it is 40w and is bloody loud so I think you're better off with a Blues junior or something smaller.

It might be overkill but one east london retailler is doing the Vox AC 30CC2 for 599 new (the AC15 is under 400)

So online, end of show demo or 2nd hand should get you one cheaper.

I know the AC 30 isn't normally associated with blues but a certain Mr Gallagher (not Noel) got one hell of a tone, and he wasn't the only one.

Around 600 gets you an orange RV 30 which is highly thought of.

If you can stretch the price a little then the Matamp Chino sounds ideal. 15W (nominal) non-master based round 2 6L6 valves all in a 1x12 combo for £693. Built like the proverbial brick sh*t house and customisable for your needs.

If you can stretch to the Matamp, go for it, awesome amps! There's also the King Street (15w Nominal). The "Nominal" figures they quote are for the clean amp, they are much louder in real life!

If the budget is limited, then you can't go far wrong with the Laney's LC/VC range. Don't forget that 30 valve watts are much louder than you think! ;)

*cough* laney *cough*

Though i'd look into an all valve fender amp too because they do sound great for blues too.
