People seem to dismiss the EMG's as sterile and lifeless.
There are making the mistake of thinking they should sound like a passive pickup.
EMG have not got the organic earthy sound of a good pasive pickup, they have got a very pure and compressed sound.
You use whatever pickup you want for what sound you want.
Its like the differnce between a Les Paul and a Strat sound, they are different for different sound.
I might use a Les Paul with BPK's, for something, a Strat BKP's for something and then a Strat with EMG's for something else, they are made differently and are not supposed to sound like passive pickups.
Got any Badges, Posters, Stickers or T-shirts?

Its a common opinion. Personally I love EMGs. I stuck with them for a long time for their precision and clarity. I still enjoy the smooth, compressed (not an inherently bad thing) and ultra-attacking sound.

But BKPs are better, IMO. Hence me switching, and the only EMGs I now own are two SAs gathering dust on a shelf (never liked them anyway: they sound about as much like a single coil as a kick drum).

I think he meens it doesn't color the sound and is compressed. I like EMG in a very good guitar, because it lets the wood talks. But a good hand made passive is even better so I don't really see the point
