I found this video quite by chance. Jeff Miller demonstrating his Variax/PRS transplant... apart from the piezo-powered Line6 circuits, he's also got a BKP Crawler in the neck position which he demos ~4:00 minutes in. That said, it's well worth a look-see for what the Variax circuit can do, especially transplanted into a decent guitar... talk about flexibility.

The Crawlers sound amazing in that guitar (ad with those fingers playing!), fat but with more brightness than I imagined they would be.
The Line6 sounds aren't too bad to be honest, not as good as the BKP but passable. I think the acoustic sounds are great, so much better than a piezo bridge sound.

The Crawler bridge sounded nice! It made the Lester model sound lifeless in comparison.

Tis a great video, is that. I thought the Variax models sounded rather good. It does help that he's a monster player. I didn't think the Crawlers sounded much better than the Lester model, although they did sound a bit brighter.

I keep toying with the idea of getting a Variax. It would be great for recording because it's absolutely silent when not being played (no magnetic pickups) and the guitar emulations were very convincing in the one I tried. And you can make your own 'guitars' with the Workbench software, adding different pickups to different bodies, altering pickup height, angle, output, etc. Hmmm.

Anyway, ace video. I also expected the Crawlers to sound a bit darker, maybe more 'full' than in that video, but it could be the way his amp is set.

I would not...

To be fair, if I tried to put Variax guts into a guitar I'm sure I'd do no better, but - no offence to him - if I paid someone to work on a guitar and it came back carved up like that I'd be gutted.

That guitar would be very useful in a gig situation and the Variax sounds are pretty good.My brother has the Acoustic and I used it for recording and I was impressed and it was very quick to set up.

I agree with you Philly if I did it myself I probably wouldn't be too upset (possibly a little ashamed but for an first attempt not too bad).

It's his supergluing the strip board & stuff to the trem block, how long does he think that will last (especially when it's for sale !)

For the guy with the crawlers, I adore that Raspberry quilted top beastie, it's da bomb as the youths would say.

I was impressed with the 12 Ric & tele tones he has posted on the site.
I wonder if anybody has transplanted the Bass version electronics into a good bass (and why didn't the model the classic 80s Wal sounds :( )
