Vengeance...
« on: November 06, 2006, 11:22:45 PM »
I moved a wee while ago to a very quiet area, full of old people and that. When I set my wireless network up again, I forgot to turn the security back on. I told myself, no big deal, no-one to nick it off me Of late though, my connection speed has gone to shite, right about the time three shifty looking young beggars moved in next door. Restored the security tonight, and all of a sudden, my internet is working brilliantly again. Clearly, these feckers have been leaching bandwidth through my walls.

So folks. What special revenge can I wreak upon these gobshitees?

You could switch off the security allow them to connect and log their mac addresses. Then you phone Mr Plod and complain as it is illegal. Legally the PSNI have to respond. If theyre slow in responding mutter stuff about pirated DVDs, porn, perverts & anarchy sites.

The other thing you could do is to allow them to connect then scan their machines for security issues then trash their machines. Unfortunitely that is illegal.

Watch their traffic & steal their passwords is a good one, then use their accounts and get them banned. This is unfortunitely also illegal

BTW I would suggest the following

Use something better than WEP encryption (takes less than 15 minutes to crack these days). Use a non dictionary password for your pass phrase as the password exchange is very open to cracking.

Ban any mac address other than your own cards from connecting to your network.

Don't bother hiding the SSID it's not worth the bother these days.

You can also (usually) reduce the transmission power of the router, or move it to somewhere that they can't get any decent signal.

I would suggest that if you make sure that you changed the default password on your router.

If encryption hits your connection too hard (some cards particularly USB adaptors suffer very badly) let me know and I can make a couple of suggestions. Also if you find that you are losing your connection to the wireless router quite often

What makes you think they have Macs Kilby?

I thought Mac users were a tiny minority (although I am one)

Nope not one of those pretty cased items I'm afraid, it's something much less pretty I'm afraid MAC = Media Access Control

It's the unique ID number that every network card has to identify it and it looks like this 00c0.1731.1e89. It can be done with higher end wired networks to stop people plugging in their personal equipment to company networks

Wireless routers allow you to specify which mac addresses are allowed to connect to that network. It gives an extra layer of security it's not foolproof but takes more effort (especially when combined with encryption).

Oh, the computer side is well covered. I certainly don't want to call the NIPS regarding piracy either, as I think I know who'd be more guilty of that...
I sealed the router up tight as a drum last night anyway. The SSID is now "DontStealMyInternetArsehole", and encryption is as powerful as I can support

I was thinking more of stupidly petty revenge. Something involving superglue, perhaps...

I need to set up some security on our wireless, its always pretty slow, only works in bursts then I have to go unplug it and then it works again for a bit. Reckon it could be due to people using it? Any ideas how to set up basic security?

Setting up basic security is a piece of piss. Just remember to connect the router to the machine you're doing the set=up with. It's a bit tricky to do the job when your computer isn't able to talk to te router two minutes in...

What kind of router is it, anyway? if it's a d-link, it's probably just meant to be like that.

A good trick for a bit of revenge and this came up earlier in the year when i had neighbour from hell grief is,

A freezer bag full of dog eggs with a little water (and mix well) on the door step, cover with some news paper, squirt some zippo lighter fuel on the paper, light the paper, knock on the door and retreat to a vantage point where you can watch the comedy of them stamping on the flames and getting a dirty foot!   Personally I've not tried it but I think a certain IT expert in here brought it up!!

I found a tube of "Liquid Nails" in the shed last night. The possibilities are endless.

Wait till Bin Day and glue their bin to the ground?
