Not a casual read, but very interesting, nonetheless.

Very well written, very interesting (although my eyes are smarting now after reading all that).  The first couple of pages brought back some good memories.

But Jesus, the man is so utterly humourless.  And so obsessed with labels.  Why does everything have to have its own little box?  Who decides what's "real" metal, what's "false", "true", "retro", "hipster"?  I get the feeling that any band that writes an ironic lyric or displays a couple of seconds of non-metal influence immediately gets added to Dave Burns' sh!tlist.  And if a band like, say, Mastodon gets accepted as "metal", Mr Burns' tone suggests that they can't possibly be genuine, instead they're somehow sneaky conniving indie bar-stewards trying to undermine or cash in on "true" metal (must admit there is something bogus about The Sword, though).

I love the way he uses innocuous words like "hipster" and indie" in such a venomous way - it seems you can't be "indie" without being "smug" or "opportunistic".

Oh well, I'm sure I have more than enough "false metal" in my record collection for Dave Burns to condemn me to hell.  And there I was thinking I'd been a metal fan for the last 27 years.  I should be hanging my head in shame.

:D Yer who`s to say whats real Metal & what isn`t ? He talked about Manowar like they were real Metal   Let me tell ya when they came out in the mid 80`s with songs like "All Men Play On Ten" they were laughed at. Somebody suggested they did a version of Y.M.C.A because they looked more Gay than the village people !  :P

And Venom were a total pile of S**t ! ten thumbed toneless noise pollutants. They only adopted the Satanic tag inorder to hide how S**t they were !! To be fare there was a lot of truely stupid Metal fans that fell for it so it has to be said it worked.

By the way have any of you seen "A Headbangers Journey" a dvd documentary by a guy who`s a Metalhead ? Check it out well worth a watch.

good documentary that ^

i was at the Wacken he filmed at (5th one in a row next year!), totally missed the cameras though :(

I've NEVER bothered with the press \ journalists \ writers and their views on metal music, magazines like Kerrang and Metal Hammer are full of flavour of the month shitee and too much hype and waffle, i just cant read them.

I'm a music fan.... labels and fads and 'scenes' pfft who cares!

If it sounds good you listen, if it sounds like cr@p you don't. True/False Plastic who cares; if we are sheep being led to slaughter we listen to the radio and beleive it's what were suposed to listen to, but then on the other hand: if we are musicians or music lovers we don't need some self serving blowhard to tell us what to listen to, we will listen to our peers and listen with our ears and the sounds  and songs that are "true" will be processed in our minds and relived in our art.
