Having finally sorted amp problems etc I recorded a solo using the new Mules in my LP Standard. After playing like cr*p in the studio I ended up doing this at home with an SM58 slung in front on the Trace Elliot Speed Twin combo using the higher gain voicing on Channel 2 but with quite low gain set. I added some Stereo delay and reverb in Cubase just to fatten it a touch. It is the bridge pickup by the way.
You can hear the great cut-through that the Mules give, so much more top end fizz and clarity than the Gibson pickup. Great pickup. Oh yes, the pickups are unpotted too.

Great tone and playing. Getting myself some basic recording eqpt. soon, I was always under the assumption that SM58 werent as good for guitar as SM57 but this one sounded good to me :P Whats the difference? Will be getting some Mule clips through my Laney when I get it/recording stuff :twisted:

The only real difference between the 2 mics is that the SM58 has a pop sheild, so it's better suited for vocals but listening to the clip can function as a great amp mic. The SM57 would be more suited for an amp mic but can still be used as a great vocal mic.

I thought the mics were voiced differently too? I understood the 58 had a more middly response.

Thanks for the comments :D I was really pleased how the sound came out with such a simple setup, I have not had such good results in the past, but might try this a bit more now. Certainly the feel of the pickup came over well. I'll be putting this solo properly into the final mix of the track tomorrow.

Very nice indeed! I more and more get convinced of the fact that mules really own that classic rock tone.

Mules might be the better Black Dogs in that perspective as I guess they are in fact closer to what Page used to play ...

Still I do dig my BlackDogs A LOT :)

When I first tried these Mules I was reminded a little of a single coil type of open sound, less muddy and compressed than most other humbuckers I have used. In fact it is possible to get a real piercing top sound on occasion which I certainly wouldn't usually associate with a humbucker.
They just sound great even with a thrown together recording like this.

Out of interest here is the solo alone without the song, unfortunately you can now hear that my playing wasn't that clean at times :lol:

That's right but not by a great deal. The SM57 are used a lot for female vocals as well.
