Amp rebias - tech guy needed....
« on: November 14, 2006, 01:45:47 PM »
Hey all,

My rivera needs new power tubes (which I have), and therefore a rebias.
Does anybody know any amp technicians in the Hampshire area? I've tried MM Music and Fret Music guitar shops, but both were either way too expensive or quoted long handling times (I can't be without it for more than a couple of days).

Many thanks in advance...

Jordan.

Apparently its quite easy to do yourself:

That might save you some money if you've got a multimeter.

This guy in based in Godalming, near Guildford. Worth calling him first to set up a meet - if it is a short job (less than an hour) he might even do it while you wait.

I went to Steve's house today, and he did a brilliant job, under an hour, and let me watch the whole thing. He even measured the valves for output so that I can buy valves from him in the future without the need to rebias.

Excellent service, and a nice guy to boot.

Cheers for the tip-off!

Jordan.

That is handy to know-I mean about an amp tech as Godalming is not far from me indeed, Mrs 38th grew up there (posh tart).

I want to change the EL34's in my Laney to 6L6's. Now on the back of the amp is a Bias switch, which lets me choose which valves i want in there. With the Laney is it just a simple case of

Turning the amp off
taking out the valves
turning the bias switch to 6L6
putting in the 6L6's
Turning the amp back on.

?  Is that it?

Dunno but sure IS on my Mesa. Although bear in mind, Mesa (and therefore maybe Laney) only say to do this with THEIR own MATCHED valves (although this is almost certainly abit of marketting BS, although quality control is damn critical).

any chance of a cost idea? I have a Rivera Knucklehead and it's good to have a lead on someone (as local dealer has a guy but said the amps are mega complicated inside with shut-offs everywhere, hence I equated that to them meaning it's costly job).

Thanks,
Nick

Sure,

It cost me £25 for the visit. I had already bought the new valves months in advance, but an hour of his time only cost £25, which I think is pretty great.

In reply to the post above, Steve also said it would be a pretty easy job to convert the amp from EL34s to 6L6s, so it certainly can be done.

Cheers,
Jordan.

Cool,
thanks Jordan, thats certainly alot less than I imagined!
My Mesa is set with 6L6's right now so not really interested in changing the Rivera. In fact, I hear 34's sound better in it (of course thats personal preference), I know Jim Root has it set with 6L6's but dunno bout many others.

Thanks again,
Nick
