Any Laney LH50R users here ?
« on: November 14, 2006, 03:03:21 PM »
Hi folks,

I am very proud seeing so much 'Laney love' on this forum. I have been using a LH50R head with Matamp 4x12 (Celestion GT 12-75) cab for some years now, usually for the warm clean side of things. The gain channel is still a monster though !

I was not sure at first with the stock (Ruby/Sovtek) valves, but then I retro fitted some (short base) Philips 6l6WGBs in the output, GEC 12ax7s in the gain channel - and a 5751 in the 1st clean channel pre-amp position. (The 5751 really adds detail).

It is now as clean as my Fender Twin but considerably warmer on the clean channel, with soaring yet articulate sustain on the hot channel.

Just curious to know if there is anybody else out there using one ?

Regards,

FF. :D

Well Davey,

Does this mean you are going to try a LH instead of a GH ?

Hi again Davey,

I look forward to hearing how you find the gain channel. I presume that you will use (and appreciate) that side of it more than I do. I am therefore curious to find out if you like the hot channel as much as I like the clean...

Please let me know what you think when you have had a go. The LH50R is a more versatile, but less 'famous' option than the GH and VH models and naturally (as a Laney convert)  I find comparisons interesting.

I have added a picture of my own, as I love the easy view control panel and subtle cosmetics - especially the chrome plated vent at the top.

Happy hunting !

 :D

The LH is basically the head version of the LC combo, right?

yes. the amp that gilbert prefers for studio work!

space ship one was recorded with an LC50 w/ 2x12 extention cab.

though, i am getting the 1st version, not the II one.

I had a MK1 LC-50 for many years, but it finally died through sheer exhaustion, or, more accurately, would have cost more than I paid for it to fix up. It needed a speaker and valves, and I only paid 90-odd quid for it. I sold it on for 70 quid and called it even. One of the few pieces of gear I've ever had I didn't feel owed me anything when I moved it on.

A very, very nice amp.

I'm sorry, but I fear I must point out that sometimes there's a difference between being dumb, and being so broke you can feed yourself. It was a rough patch. Left a weekly paying job for a monthly paying one half-way through the month, so didn't get any money for nearly 7 weeks.

I sold it about 4 years ago, which would explain why I didn't tell you...

You sure can James  :D

You must be the chap that lives in Rodley then ? If so I live just up the road in Bramley. The only restriction I have is that I currently have no access to a rehersal room or similar "blasting pad " . I also have no car, but if you have access to wheels and  sympathetic neighbours I would be very interested in your opinion. My LH50R head is flight cased, and so travels well. You may want to try the Mule loaded LP and SM loaded S.G. at the same time.

Unfortunately my own house is a small terrace in a built up area, and so is not really condusive to high volumes unless I want to announce my 'equipment stash' to passing burglars and **** off the neighbours.

Nice to hear of another local BKP cultural correspondent !

Regards,

Derek.
