I think that is what they are called, which ones are good for connecting pedals together and does it really matter if you get really expensive ones or not?

It matters, there's many good cables: Proco, george L's, etc... I personnaly use top of the line Planet Waves, not too pricey and very good for my bedroom use (far better than any other cr@p cables)

Using low quality cable can seriously suck the life out of your sound.  Even a little patch cable in between pedals can have an effect - I was amazed at the difference when I got my Spectraflex cables.

However, for my two patch cables (wah -> chorus -> flanger) I use Monster Rock 8" patch cables.  Generally I don't like Monster (hype, price, reliability/durability) but for a fixed installation they're OK, the sound is good & 2 little patch cables didn't exactly break the bank.... :)

I love their compression point 1/4" plugs, very stable. I might get a 20 fts cable with an on/off switch, looks usefull, I switch between guitars too much hehe

I have recently changed all my leads to Van Damme cables (no not Jean Claude), the best leads i have ever used. NOt cheap but worth it.
