Nailbomb users : Pickup Height??
« on: November 15, 2006, 01:03:21 PM »
As currently using a Nailbomb in the bridge of my Les Paul, I`m just curious about finding the exact 'sweet' spot for the pickups height..

About 3/4 mm away from the strings gives clarity, but loses bite...then 2mm or so has a great attack but getting slight issues with the alnico magnet pulling on the D/G strings.

Just wondering what height other users have theirs set at? I appreciate every amp setup is different (and tuning is a factor + picking style.)

Is it best to keep the pickup height flat or stagger the ends? Eg: pickup is higher to the GBE strings, and slightly lower for the EAD...

I`m currently using a Peavey JSX head through the high input, with guage 12-56 strings on tuned to C#, combined with an agressive attack with a dunlop 3mm Jazz plectrum. Overdrive is on 6-7 on Ultra channel.

I also have a band audition coming up soon, and will be changing to 11's to tune to E/Eb. Just looking for input to get the best from this beast of a pickup!!

The sweet spot is whatever sounds best to you!

yea, adjusting the pickup to the right height can be an absolute bugger, but just find the place that suits you..

I like to find that spot between, power, tone and harmonic content.. where ever that might be depending on my playing, guitar, amp etc.

A quote from Tim to myself.  Just replace warpig with nailbomb in the quote.

"A humbucker, any humbucker, doesn't have that kind of power.Strat coils, yes cos the poles are actaully magnetic rod aimed directly at the string but with a Warpig the magnet is underneath the coils and the magnetism goes up through the pole screws. "

Mine is about 2mm (maybe a little more but not 3mm) from the strings when pressed down at the 24th fret, but I set it for looks and practicality rather than sound, I don't feel the need to change the height though as it works for me, I use 9.5 - 44 strings at as close to concert pitch my set-up allows :)
