Pickup For a Jazz Guitar

Hi there,

Im looking to upgrade the pickups in my Ibanez Artcore AF75 and heard very positive things about the bareknuckles. Im looking for a Neck humbucker that will give me a good warm jazz tone, something quite flat and mellow, i think, lol. If anyone can give any advice and / or samples that would be great. Was reccomended something like a Stormy Monday, but couldnt find any samples. If its of any importance i play direct through a Fender Stage 112 SE.

I would consider a Mississippi Queen humbucker size P90 or, believe it or not, a VHII neck-very jazzy when run super clean.

I hate to add to or contradict anything that Tim says, but there is a lovely soundclip by djlewis on page 2 of the players section using Stormy Mondays in an ES175. If I remember correctly there was another earlier one by someone uing a 347 also.

I am somewhat biased, as I own an Alnico II set of SMs  (currently played clean in an S.G) and they are just so haunting and perfectly balanced across the frequency range.

My first thought was definitely the Stormy Mondays, too (though it's true that clips of them are underrepresented).  I wouldn't dream of disagreeing with Tim :) I just haven't heard enough MQ clips (there are more of those available than of the SMs) to really get a feel for them.  Don't see why they wouldn't work, though!

(As for the Warpigs ;) yeah, isn't there the oft-mentioned-on-BKP-forum French jazz player who uses them? :))

A lot of jazztones require a slightly fuller sounding pickup
Many players prefer something in the 12k-14k DC range

So an emerald or even a Rebel Yell would suit

Trouble is some jazz players are put off by the names
I dealt with this a while back
Whilst i knew and Tim advised that Rebel Yells would work great _ I knew unless i relabelled the box "Django's Hotclub" or something that suggested smoky jazz clubs, the player would think the pickup was too "ROCK" to work for jazz

So I'll throw down the gauntlet for the best sounding name for a jazz pickup
