I think I wore out my copy of that live Ozzy vid in the place where Jake has his guitar solo, awesome stuff. He really makes that guitar scream. There are some good clips of him with Badlands on youtube too.

Jake was awesome as a player - seems to get left out in everyones obsession with Zakk

I love the cello playing technique where he uses his thumb on the fretboard

Yeah.  I love the way he does dive-bombs using the tuning peg.  ;)

I also stole his (highly questionable from a guitar care point of view) mini-dive by bending the neck forward.

Also stole the percussive stuff by hammering the body with your fist.

TBH I love Zakk's playing in small doses, but Jake has a far better sense of melody with his solos.  Zakk's are pretty repetitive.

I have to agree with that. I think Jake's solos edge it and he is criminally overlooked.  :?

i used to do the neck bend thing too, and i still do the body thump percussive thing, but i got both from Slash.  but who knows, maybe he got them from Jake.  actually, i imagine it's probably been done for many years, but we can only ever say where we saw it first

I copied the forward neck-bend from Pat Travers, who mentioned it in an interview in Guitar Player magazine sometime in 1980.  I never understood how he got away with it on those thin Melody Maker necks, and I saw him doing it pretty aggressively a couple of times live.

Careful.  I know one forum who tried that and after a while it opened a wormhole to an alternate universe...  ;)

I've got a Melody Maker of about the same vintage (65) and the neck is actually pretty chunky.  It tapers though, so at the nut it's quite shallow - I'd be scared the headstock would snap off.  Maybe PT's did eventually, and that's why he ended up with the double-cut LP!

On thing's for sure, I'm not going to be putting mine to the test any time soon.

Mine's a 65 also, routed for twin humbuckers Travers-style.  I agree with you that most of the neck is just fine, but that tapering around the nut/headstock is what I was referring to.  You can definitely feel it give a little when you try the neck-bending thing.  If ours ever break, we can band together and file a 2-person class-action lawsuit against PT for publicly endorsing neck abuse.     :D

That's cruel, I shouldn't think ol' Pat's exactly rolling in dough nowadays!

Did you rout yours yourself, or did you buy it that way?  I considered PT-ing (or Joan Jett-ing) mine, but I couldn't bring myself to carve it up (which is one reason I don't usually buy vintage guitars).  I ended up getting a rails-style humbucker hidden under a MM cover, from the Seymour Duncan custom shop.
