DC resistance-are ye curious?
« on: June 25, 2005, 05:13:53 PM »
DC resistance is number we equate with the "hit points"of a pick up right?
-how many have you actually got going on?-
You can take a reading with yer hardware store variety multimeter-
I use  the 200kA setting on the jog wheel-
-you can't get accurate results with the pickup wired into the harness of the guitar, either- if you really want to know, do this before you install, or you 'll be removing it completely , right?
-ideally, you can check a pickup straight from the box-
my Warpig is 4-wires-
you want the red & black wires for  this- bend the bare shield, and the soldered white & green wires out of the way, so they are making no contact with anything-
-hold the  probe needles of the multimeter against the wires- red on red, black on black- against the foam of the packing in the box the pickup came in-keep solid contact for a good 30 seconds- the numbers will roll around a bit until they average-
-and keep yer fingers out of this simple circuit, too-
-and there you go-
I got 23.6k on my  Warpig 4 wire Bridge-
I'm glad to know, wrote this down on my warranty card-
-cool , too- The pig's 23k published DC resistance is hot already, and I know that if I had to choose between two, I would lunge for the hotter one,
wouldn't you?- hehehe- rotten in Denmark, bruther Drac

-I'm All about Heavy Metal guitars-
 - Business, & pleasure-
I have a one man guitarshop-building and repairing- here in Copenhagen
I play extreme death metal  in a Danish band called Downlord
-there's 20 guys building/repairing here-I've found my metal niche-
-I build my own designs- very pointy, dangerous things  that look like everything I have ever liked all rolled into one-
 the farther out, the better-
-I've been playing guitar since I was seven- started out studying violin building, but now just build shred machines, like I prefer  to play myself...
 life is good!
-I'm planning on posting some soundclips after the week end-
SKÅL!-nice hearing back  from you guys!- Drac

Point to remember on DC res-it's heat sensitive-accurate readings should be taken at room temperature.
Even holding a pickup in your hand will up the DC res and it can take a while to settle back down again too, especially big coils.

Hello Tim!-
-thanks for the temperature tip-
-I am curious in regard to your winding procedure...
Do you get readings as you wind?-can you see how much  you have already wound as you go, & when to stop?
-what is the accuracy of your system, +/-...???
-I will test my Warpig again, and bear your hints in mind-
happy as hell with the pig in my Vee!-
-cheers for the feedback!

Say Drac. Do you have some pics of the guitars you make? Pointy guitars always make me curious. I'm still trying to figure out what's the scariest guitar in the world. Mick 7's Warlock took that position for a while, now I think it's Feline's Gothic SG.

The winder I use has a digital reader that registers each full turn of the coil-it's a hall effect sensor that picks up a metal shim on the fly wheel and it's very accurate. We use the same system on Steve and Ray's winders too and it works very well.

You can take DC readings as you wind, although this can be tricky with plain enamel as you have to sand off a small section of wire to be able to get a reading.Again you have to remember, the wire is picking up a small amount of heat from your fingers as it passes through so really it's best to wind the coil and take a reading once it's stabilised. After a while you get a feeling for it anyway.
There are variables to take into consideration-coil shape, scatter pattern(which should be random)and tension.all of this can effect DC,ie too much tension and the wire stretches-up goes the DC as you're effectively lengthening it.Too loose and again more wire is going on for any given turn-up goes your DC.
As you can see, tensioning is critical to correct DC.Some handwinders use a pretensioning device but I prefer to use the hand method as you can vary the tension, can control coil shape better and scatter better too.

-Fascinating, Tim...
-Pickups are as shrouded in myth and mystery as instrument building-
you multiply  this as they come together, and questions arise...
thanks for the insight- Would love to hear more about how you got to where you are, and why you do the things you do-
-the end result: your pickups speak for themselves,
but I'd still like to hear...
thanks regardless for the speedy reply...Drac
