Hello everyone,

I would like to know what is the difference for a single coil, between flat profile magnets and vintage staggered hand bevelled magnets ?? :?
What is the sound difference,please ??
Just want to know before ordering my new pickups !!!! 8) -----> Trilogy Suite :twisted:

There's no difference in sound. The magnets stagger is to compensate for vintage radius guitars or modern guitars with flatter radius.

i feel that theere is a difference in string response- or sensitivity for a given string
The closer to a magnet that the string is the greater the strength of the magnetic field

Vintage stagger vs flat - the sound could be the same but the volume for each string may be slightly different

in the past the stagger for single coils changed as more players went from a wound G to a plain G. (A plain G has a stronger resonse as it is the diameter of the central core of the string which determines the strngth of signal response generated in the coil) So later "vintage "pickups have a lower G polepiece than previously

Also accounting for a more modern fingerboard radius like on a Gibson / Jackson/Ibanez /ESP rather than the old 7.25 radius on a vintage fender

Many factors come into play.....

But some people like a "mismatched response" because it is like what they have heard over the years - either live or on record

My guitar is a fender american deluxe ash strat and the radius is 9.5" is it a flatter radius ? Does that mean I have to choose vintage staggered magnets :?:

The topic of "vintage stagger with flatter/compound radius boards" has been something I've been thinking about for quite a while. I spoke to Tim about it and he said he plays vintage stagger Apaches on a strat with a 7.25-16" compound radius (yes, that is pretty extreme!) without any problems.

I've also heard people on Fender forums comment that of all the single coils they've tried with vintage stagger, BKPs are the ones that perform best (ie. suffer least from volume discrepencies). I don't have any personal experience of this as currently my Apaches are fitted to a 7.25" radius strat neck, but I'm about to order a 10-14" compound radius neck so I'll let you know how it goes.

If anyone has any opinions on this, I'd be interested to hear them.
