Request:: Site needs more info of "The Painkiller"

the player area has only 2 clips of the Painkiller.

some say that it sounds british and that's all...

the pickup description in the products section doesn't help.

some guys even have said that it sounds "gay" because it is voiced by Judas Priest and etc... (I'm sure it isn't gay)

I don't understand how the Painkiller compares to the other pickups.

and some people ask about it and get no response.

how is the bass? mids? highs? bridge & neck? tight? output? hot? voiced?

I need to know if it compares to the other High Gain and for what metal is it suitable. Thrash? Heavy? Progressive? Hard Rock? etc etc

etc etc.  :shock:


I guess somebody with them must give an accurate description about the Piankiller neck and bridge. Many people can benifit from it with the search engine looking for this topic.

I'm guessing there's not much info in the players' section because it's pretty new- and also I guess just bad luck, because the guys who have bought one haven't made many clips for whatever reason...

there's supposed to be a new website with "official" clips, but that's been in the pipeline for a while, it's a big task etc.

I agree with octavio, there just not enough info about the Painkiller. TO be honest, i cant understand diddlysquad of BKP`s description of the pickups. At least not to the task of find differences of similarities between them.

Im considering to buy a Painkiller set, but i feel stranded...

As Dave says, the PK's have not been available for long and therefore there is not a lot in terms of clips but if you speak to Dakine nicely he might elaborate.

I'm getting a set in my Charvel - will probably get the guitar back in January.  I'll post some comments then & if I've got my music room back will try to record some clips.

As other posters have pointed out, it's a new pickup - there probably aren't that many people on the forum that have it yet.

Firstly, my life is chaos on steroids right now so had no more time to post more clips.
Also, sound is wholey subjective so it's NOT easy to 'define' what a pickup sounds like.
I have Custom Warpig set, Warpig set and Painkiller set so am also very loathe to make comparrisons with pups I do not own.

All that being said, ask away and I will TRY to answer any questions.

For a start the set is in my EBMM Petrucci. You might know this guitar comes fitted with custom DiMarzio pups (closest retail pups being Air Norton and Steves Special). Well, these pups bugged me from the outset, to my ears/playing they were too sterile/quiet and clinical.

What did the Painkiller set do for this guitar? Well, to my ears they are the 'Classic Heavy' sound, that is NOT to say they are not modern, but they EQ (from the get go) as 'F you I'm here to play loud and obnoxiously wether you like it or not' kinda thing. Basically they are the perfect 'platform' to 'tweak' from. My Custom Warpigs were recommended to me by Tim for my Gibson Explorer for that 'old skool' Metallica chug, and that they do, but they are way harder to 'tame' than say a Painkiller. The mids are there with the PK, to be added to or scooped as desired. The output is controlled ferocity, they can ROAR or sound very sweet indeed. In fact one of the surprises with this pups was their 'split' sound. The Petrucci middle position is the single inner coil of both pups, with the PK's this is so clean and 'jangly' the blues/jazz is effortless and frankly surprising for such a pup.
I have said before and will again but these pups, to my mind, are the 'New Wave of British Heavy Metal' in a box. This does NOT however mean they are 'dated', indeed many genres can be covered with these pups as tweaking an amp only makes their tone infinate. They are NOT a 'one trick pony' and searing leads that cut through to tight chug can be garnered easily. I have only dropped to D thus far (as not had time/inclination for truss rod tweaking to garner lower tunings) but the bass response and overall 'meat' is very easily obtained.
In short, for Metal these are a very very versatile and precise pup.

I will endevour (time permitting) to answer any other questions but for now I hope this helps.

now... to a more personal question about these pickups...

I have miracle man in the bridge with my cold sweat on the neck.

I love this combo but I wish I had more dynamics and stuff to do with the miracle man.

so I want a "tamed" more chuggy mid crunchy pickup and I guess the Painkiller could give me that.

so all I want to know is... if the Painkiller can do Modern Metal as well as the Miracle Man? because your clips sound great! but would want to listen to a more modern metal sound with em.

thrash, heavy and progresive and some mild death metal comes to mind... and also want to know how are the pinch harmonics?

so basically... I want a more versatil Miracle Man with more Mids and chuggness and tightness.

yes, i also wondered how the P.H.'s are. I'm sure they're great, i mean, priest did plenty of them. also, how's the sustain and are the highs really screamin'?

The highs do scream through, but not in a harsh ice pick way. It's a very rounded high but with some bite to it. So when you play a solo, you REALLY hear a solo come through. Then return to chuggy goodness.

The sustain really matters with your guitar and your amp settings, but harmonics are easier to obtain with the Painkiller.

The PK is abit more rounded I think. In that the EQ is more 'even' and allows mids and harmonics aplenty.
This really is a GREAT 'Metal' pickup to really play with your amp/pedal settings with as it's versatility is seemingly endless.
It cuts through like a laser and can still chug with the best.
Basically, start (as with new amp) with std. 12 o'clock settings and adjust amp settings to suit, i.e. want bass, dial it in etc. Basically what I am saying is the PK dos'nt need anything 'taking out', it's an IMMENSE platform to 'add' to with amp EQ'ing.
The tone and vol. BLOW the pups that were in the Pet away (shame on you Mr.Petrucci lol) yet have evry dynamic you could wish for, it's all there to tweak into.
These are hot and fiery pups that beg to be shaped to an individual tone.
Now, they will not be as heavy as a Warpig per se but can do 'all-rounder' duty way better IMO.
