Fender Tele needs new set
« on: December 26, 2006, 04:46:42 AM »
Have been searching for a new set for my tele that I bought last year.  It's a swamp ash body with rosewood fretboard.  I pretty much live on the neck pickup, but I still want to buy a matched set.  My musical tastes are very eclectic (Zeppelin, Phish, Bob Marley, Hendrix, Wes Montgomery, Django, Scofield, Santana, Coltrane, Miles... the list is endless) so I need a pickup that will accomodate the wide range of sounds I want to call upon.  I play through low wattage Fender tube amps that are on the edge of breakup and rely on overdrive to push my tone over the top.  What I want is a pickup that will go from clean sparkling jazzy to gnarly overdriven with a fair amount of sustain.  I am going to have my tech install a four-way switch as well and wanted to know if the model must be reverse wound to engage that fourth position effectively.  The sets I'm considering are Country Boy (not sure if they will be powerful enough), Brown Sugar (is there a lot of midrange added?), or the Boss.  I want to retain that textbook tele sound, but don't want this guitar to be a one trick pony.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi, welcome to the forum-Tele players are in short supply.I have a Tele with Country Boy pups fitted. They are classic vintage Tele in everysense of the words classic and vintage. Mine is a Mexican 1950's reissue and therefore does not have a r/w fretboard as yours does however, I have never had an issue with the output as they are pretty much what was there.I think you can always add from other sources, with hotter pickups you cannot subtract if you get my meaning. My sound is like yours in that I like to use clean/just breaking up tones but on odd occasions I need something heavier I add a pedal. Getting the core tone right is everything as far as I am concerned. The only other set I was considering at the time was a set of brown Sugars for the thicker mids.See what others suggest.I did post a clip in the players section-it is way back and if i can get you the linkle  shall be back to post it.I don't think you have to have reverse wound for the 4 way switch-I had one fitted-definately definately go for it.You get the standard Tele sounds but with an extra.
