Hi all im wondering if you can help me i have just installed a Mississippi Queen in my guitar and i seem to be having problems with it. I keep getting a loud clunk from my amp every now and again also im getting alot more noise when im sat at my comp monitor alot more than i used to do. Could this be down to a bad wiring job ? many thanks

i dont know about the clunk, but about the computer monitor...

i get the same thing when i play next to my tv: a hell of a load of noise!

i just turned it off, and it stopped! i think it may be something to do with the magnets interacting with the signals perhaps, could anyone add to this and help Sherpa please? also please help about the clunking noise.

so do some pickups pick more noise up than others ? my emg's dont realy pick any noise up or my rio grad's

A P90 is effectively a single coil (i.e. not hum cancelling) so you will be vulnerable to 60-cycle hum.

As for the "loud clunk" are you doing anything particular when it happens? or does it just happen when the guitar is sitting on its stand without you touching it? Does it only happen when that guitar is plugged in?

it only happens when its plugging into the amp it also happens when the volume is down on the guitar aswel

If it's what it sounds like then it's fairly normal, there will be more people that actually know about electronics that will be able to give you a better answer though.

There is a type of jack socket that you could fit to stop it happening, but I've not got the link anymore (new computer :( )

The Mississippi Queen is a single coil, it will pick up interference from evey electrical item in your house, from the fridge to the hoover but the worst is often a TV or computer. This is one of the reasons that humbuckers were invented! Try moving away from computer or turn it off if you're not using it, or else you'll need a noise gate like the Decimator pedal.
The amp clunk sounds like an amp problem, I can't imagine any sound like that being caused by the circuit in the guitar, especially if the guitar volume is at zero.

Does the noise change when you turn away from the computer? I have this with my Strats-it is, as has been said, single coils interacting with noise given off by the computer.The same happens with dimmer switches. In my case if I am recording I turn off the PC in my music room( I don't need it for recording fortunately). I think my BKP's are less noisy than their predeccessors but I cannot prove or quantify it. As for the clunking sound, I reckeon Gingataff is right- chances are it is the amp particularly if the guitar volume is turned down.

The 'clunk' is a weird one ... is it handling noise? Is there any way you can record it? It sounds like the pup is picking up handling noise, which can happen when you have it mounted directly to the wood; You can try neoprene spacers to isolate the pup ... Without hearing the sound, it's really hard to diagnose. Sorry.
