When wiring attacks ...
« on: January 06, 2007, 03:38:50 PM »
Hey there, a newbie here.
I've have just ordered a set of Warpigs for my trusty SG :D and to pass the time while I wait for them to arrive, I've been looking at the various wiring options available for humbuckers. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether its worth going to the effort of putting in a set of extra switches into a guitar to allow series / parallel wiring and coil cuts &c?  does anyone out there use a custom wiring setup, and is it worth the extra hour of soldering before I can cut loose with the new pups?

Welcome, 99_not_out (clearly nothing to do with the England cricket team)!  :D  (BTW, is that a Devon flag??)

Problem with an SG is the body's not deep enough for push-pull pots, so you'd have to drill holes for mini-switches.  Not good for the guitar's value!  Although you could put them on a scratchplate so there's no visible damage.

It's possible to use the tone control pot as a coil-splitter like this, but then you no longer have a tone control, so personally I'm not keen on the idea.

I hear that the Warpig sounds great in parallel, so when I eventually get one for my black SG-X (which already has a mini-switch) that's how I'll be wiring it.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Thanks for the info Philly Q! I was just about to get carried away and fetch me some push-pull pots as well. I'll have a look at getting some smaller switches I think for the series/parallel option.

And sob  the cricket sucked. I work with a bunch of Aussies too.
