Gibson SG Special Faded - Which Colour?
« on: January 08, 2007, 06:58:12 PM »
OK folks - may have the occasion to go to the USA soon and I am thinking about buying an SG Special Faded - question is, which colour? Faded Cherry or Faded Brown?

http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_gibson_faded_sg_special_electric_guitar?full_sku=102935921

Thanks

Mike

Funnily enough I was thinking the same about getting myself a LP Special. For the SG, though, I would say Cherry-just to put you in a quandary.
Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance

the individualist in me says BROWN.
however, the conformist says an SG should only wear red 8)

BROWN!  It has that cool 1970s walnut look.

The Faded Cherry looks a bit too "red" - it's neither a proper cherry nor the sort-of-orangey colour cherry actually fades to.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

^ probably +1 on what indy said. To be honest, they're both nice, and are both sufficiently similar that you'd probably like either. It's not like you're choosing between red and white, for example...

EDIT: just bear in mind, I haven't seen either of these in the flesh, I don't think (or if I did, I didn't notice). Best go by someone who has seen them, lol.

I feel the cherry faded looks great, however, it's a terrible guitar, I'd avoid it like the plague.

+1 on faded brown
The red pigment in Gibson paint fades and leaves the guitar looking brown
So BROWN is a more natural colour - providing they got it the right shade

A mate of mine wanted a brown one but they sold out so he got the cherry, nice guitar actually but scratched easily. It was very red though, we both preferred the brown.

nfe - curious as to why you think it is a terrible guitar? What's wrong with it?

Cherry, that brown is disgusting... but you can do much, much better than that. The SG Special's are rather poor.

Would appreciate some views on WHY they are poor - Build quality? Playability? Set up? Finish? All of the above???  Remember it would only be about £300 in the USA....

Thanks

All of the above, if you wanted a cheap SG - you'd be better to get a Tokai and swap out the pickups.
