Well I dont listen to much death metal but I always recommend Carcass. The albums 'Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious' and 'Heartwork' are my favourites. Necrophagist although not sure if people call it death metal or not, either way, full of technical riffage and much shreddage

Spooky, as soon as I read the title of this post I thought, "Carcass"!
I guess they count as death metal but they are definitely worth checking out.
MM set, warpig set, about to be fitted - custom 7 bridge 'pig, CS7 neck.

Well, this is a big subject that I could talk about forever :)  What flavour of DM do you like, mid-paced grindy DM? full-on blast beats DM? technical DM?  What are you listening to now?

Off the top of my head here are some favourites of mine (new & old):

Hate Eternal: Conquering the throne
Nile: In their darkened shrines
Obituary: The End Complete
Bolt Thrower: ...For Victory
Entombed: Clandestine
Morbid Angel: Covenant
Disincarnate: Dreams of a carrion kind
Death: Individual thought patterns
Cannibal Corpse: Tomb of the mutilated
Suffocation: Effigy of the forgotten
Deicide: When satan lives
Arch Enemy: Black earth (Wages of Sin is actually my favourite, but can you really call that DM?)

Of course, some of the above bands have several excellent CDs, I just listed my favourite of each...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

If you don't mind Egypt-themed stuff, Nile will blow you away. Super technical and heavy enough to rip you face off. You could also do worse than to give Vader a try.
Also, while they're not exactly death metal, if you're into awesome, heavy but highly technical guitar work, have a listen to Nevermore. Jeff Loomis is one of the best metal players I've ever heard.
Warpigs.

just few bands:

Mors Principium Est - melodic DM with symphonic elements
Quo Vadis - amazing DM with awesome drummer
Amon Amarth - melodic DM and all their subjects are... VIKINGS! hell yeah
Cryptopsy - brutal and heavy DM with weird vocals
Kronos - same as above
Death - classic and mind blowing D
old In Flames - awesome gothenburg melodic DM
Insomnium - melodic and actually beautiful DM
Wintersun - very same as above but soooo epic, probably my fav DM band (and only 1 album released!!!)
Kalmah - again awesome melodic DM
new Testament - thrashy, face-chrushing and catchy DM, particulary 'The Gathering' album
Metal is forever, but I still got the blues for you

For death metal so brutal you'll have to wear a helmet, look no further than:

Linkin Park - Reanimation
