I'm thinking about getting a Framus 2x12..
« on: January 13, 2007, 10:54:33 PM »
Currently using the custom 2x12 I bought off ebay a while ago with my Laney but the sound isnt really doing it for me. I could replace the top speaker with something like a Classic Lead or V30 but I wonder if the cab itself just isnt a good match for my amp. It was apparently made by a recording studio and it looks well put together but the current sound isnt as lively or punchy as I'd like, could that be a construction/design problem?

People over on HC say that Laneys are very choosy about their cabs and  I have heard some great clips of a VH100R into a Framus 2x12 over there (as well as that clip bloodmountain posted the link to here), the tone is exactly what I want but cant currently get from my setup (apparently the GH50L are similar to VH100R but just single channel). As well as the good clips, a number of people there say the Framus 2x12 is a good cab.

This is the cab I am on about, and the price seems awesome, plus if I added a set of strings or something then the price would be over 300 euros which = free shipping to the UK -

I guess I could at least buy it to try but then I'll have an extra cab sitting around gathering dust. If I do buy it and like it, then my current 2x12 will be up for sale if anyone would be interested.

Any opinions and experiences with this cab would be great, thanks.

no opinions other than I've spotted that deal before too, and am quite interested too, that is if I could find the space, lol. Oh, and I'd like a change from v30's. :(

it's definitely the best value 2x12 I've come across from a well-respected manufacturer. Haven't been able to try it, unfortunately.

The only thing that occurs to me is that the speakers are worth nearly £100 for the pair, so that's £100 for the cab.  Given the labour cost to produce it, there's not a lot left for raw materials.  Is it going to be of decent quality????

I'm sure Framus, and most other cabinet makers get their speakers and materials for a whole lot less than you or I could.

why not go for a 4x12? If your willing to drop cash like that theres plenty of options open to you.

knowing tom, i'd say that it would be overkill; why would he need a 4x12 that  would take up yet more space?

Yeah I dont really need or want a 4x12 (plus it probably wouldnt even fit in my car).

This Framus 2x12 seems a lot smaller than my current cab (which is actually a bit taller than the Marshall 4x12 at the studio we practise in :?!), so would you expect it to sound smaller or should it still fill a room nicely? Probably would be better with the back taken off it I imagine..

That Framus would do very nicely; I'd leave the back on maybe, for a more focussed and punchy sound. It could be that the other studio cab you mentioned was built with a "flatness" in mind.
The lack of sparkle you mention could well be the materials as type of wood/ply makes a real difference in sound(to my ear, at least as much as woods do for a guitar). Chipboard or mdf will not really engage with or transport the mids/highs very well: its inertness could be ideal in a studio for some applications...or rather, something like birch ply will really allow the full harmonic content to come through.

Laney do a 2 x 10 rated at,I think, 70w-I was thinking of getting one at one point-the model number is GS210VE bit I know some peaple prefer 12 inch speakers rather than 10 inch speakers (no lewd comments Sambo). It has Jensens I beleive.

even with a bulk purchase crate of 100 Celestion V30s you can get 'em for £12 each - I bet Framus are buying WAY more than that.

Well, Framus as a manufacturer won't pay street retail price for their celestions, they buy them excl. VAT and at a cheaper rate I'm sure.

Also it's funny, but in the US there is this Framus hype, whereas here Framus stuff is cheap and noone gives a damn

my only slight worry is what type of ply is it. On the framus site is says "17mm plywood housing", but doesn't specify which type... far as I'm aware, birch is good, I'm sure other types are good too. It could just be an oversight, obviously, but if I were serious about buying, I'd consider whipping off an e-mail to framus just to make sure what type of ply it is.

If i could sell my current cab (marshall 1936 2x12) for £200 i could get a new framus one. Wow... I'm going to try that. That is assuming any framus is better than any marshall. Lamb of God use framus cabs yeah?

I think there's a shop in Liverpool that sells some of the more expensive cabs- but i don't think that demoing one of those would be a fair comparison...
