I just bought an LC15R. Never tried one and it won't arrive for a few days so I don't know what I think of it yet. Just really looking for the thoughts of anyone else who has one, the general sort of what valves to use, what to replace the speaker with, how it handles effects sort of stuff...

I was playing though a mate of mine's earlier.  Lovely, lovely tone.  He bought the "upgrade kit" from Watford valves for his and it's superb.

the reverb version is utter shitee

unless you're playing REAL lov volumes.

anything above 4, with moderate gain is unlistenable.

I've heard that about them, that they don't crank well. Not really a problem, I doubt the volume will be going above 1 very often. Maybe 2 when I find my house empty. Not 3, though.

Twinfan, do you know what speaker your friend uses? You could write what I know about 10" speakers on the back of a postage stamp that was already stuck to an envelope.

Yeah, I saw that, but they have a celestion V10 kit too. Dunno what difference it'd make...

I know in another thread that phil king said the eminence 10" speakers were a lot better than the celestion ones. Wasn't in relation to laneys, but phil normally knows what he's talking about (understatement). EDIT: just to clarify, I haven't tried either.

They tried to deliver it on Monday but I was at work, it'll be arriving tomorrow morning now.

So general consensus is that a 10" is worth going for? More convenient and cheaper than buying a separate cab, and still a decent sound?

Yeah, my mate's sounds really nice.  I'll admit that was at low volumes though.  It was a Strat straight into it.  I'm pretty sure he's got a Jenson speaker in his - probably the kit that was linked to earlier.

I've got the LC50 combo and its a sweet amp

Great cleans, better then Marshall and the Gain is very usable although i put a DS-1 In front of it.

I've even used it as a vocal amp when our P.A broke and that was great!

Trust the volume pot on my only assembled guitar to come loose the day the damn thing arrives... That aside (can't be bothered fixing it), first impressions are good. The reverb is better than I was expecting it to be (although there's a loose wire somewhere that periodically decides to just buzz uncontrollably rather than actually add any reverb. Nothing a bit of selotape and some ingenuity won't fix), there are some really nice chiming cleans in there, and it just sounds great all the way up the gain knob, through blues, classic rock, up to actually quite convincing metal distortion. On about 7-8 it'll lap up early metallica, 10 takes it not too far from machine head territory. I was expecting to need a boost pedal to get anywhere near the amount of gain the laney can produce. And it's good gain, too, it doesn't mush up too much or fizz at all. It's no recto, it's quite grainy, but personally I like that. Very usable right the way up. I might just get one of those danelectro EQs for pushing it a bit harder, though.

The amp's EQ actually seems very flexible at high gain, too, for going between a british mid punch sort of tone and a more american scooped tone (shut up, I like it). It's not perfect, I think I'd maybe like some warmer valves, and just generally a better speaker, but that's not too much effort to change. Once I've changed the valves and speaker and bought an EQ (bringing the total to about £250) I don't think I'll be looking to replace it for a very long time.

The question now is, which speaker, and which valves? I've heard EH valves are quite warm sounding generally? I've got no idea what speaker to go for. Something as versatile as possible, I suppose. Any ideas?
