OK, I've looked at the wide world of the interweb to see whats out there and learn a little of what does what, spoken with a mate thats a sound engineer and this is my final list. I'm gonna buy it before the end of the week unless theres a flaw in my plan.

Soundcard/pre's: Emu 1616M with breakout box
Mics: SM57, Audix i5
Headphones: Sennheiser HD25

The opbjective being the best possible guitar sounds with the greatest simplicity possible.

total from dolphin or turnkey: a shade less than £600.

Does this seem sensible, capable and well-priced to you? Do you see any problems?

and a question: when I get this stuff, which I will unless anyone has any good reasons why my PC and the recording gear shall not be wed, will I be able to use my creative amp and the hi-fi speakers that are hooked up to it?

Its a pretty standard 5.1 surround thing (just the front speakers are hi-fi speakers).

The pictures of the E-Mu 1616M dont seem to have the needed connectors. Are they hiding round the back?

If I cant, what do I need?

Sorry, I don't know anything about that gear, but it looks like a quality rig.

Not many good sound cards that do surround sound - but then again, they're not designed for leisure listening or gaming.

M-audio do a 5.1 and 7.1 card which is prolly quite decent, but wouldn't have the proper benefits of a good sound card.

Ok, I found a more complete description and the E-mu does have the capability to hook up to a 5.1 amp, so thats that sorted (as a stop gap till I get good speakers).

Thanks for the vote of confidence there, To: are you going off specs you found with regard to the E-Mu (I know the other stuffs good, I've used it or in the case of the i5, heard a comparison with the 57).

All sounds good to me, I've been looking into the Emu as well recently.
I'm going to be starting a Music Technology course next year at Uni to follow on from the one I'm doing at A-level and figured getting some stuff for home would be very useful.

Has anyone seen the Cardbus on sale on it's own? I was planning on getting the PCI version of the EMU to use at home, but will most likely be getting a new laptop to take with me to uni so would need the cardbus.

Misread, thought you were asking whether the sound card itself accepted 5.1, as oppose to connecting your amp.

Just come across this little gem

Alesis Firewire Multimix 12

Also comes in smaller (8 channel) and larger (16 channel)versions.
I think you already said you had some a DAW, but this also comes with Cubase LE if you wanted to use it.

This would be able to replace the Emu.

Also found this; Edirol FA-101
Which seems a better deal than the Emu, depsite the lack of DSP effects.

There is also a USB version, the UA-101 if you don't have a firewire port.

The Edirol is an external Soundcard much like the Emu, only offers more Inputs and Outputs and what I consider more flexible connectivity.

The Alesis will also act as it's own soundcard effectively, but you'd probably want to keep the soundcard you're currently using to allow you to use your surround system.

Too late!

I got the emu.

I dont need an awfull lot of I/Os, and went for the E-Mus generally superior handling capability.

I'm never saying never, though. I now plan to get a mixer and removable media multitrack recorder eventually.
