Charvel and V-Amp 2 doing brown sound..
« on: January 24, 2007, 10:17:46 PM »
Seeing as I got myself a superstrat I thought it was only right to attempt some Van Halen with it

So the playing isnt amazing but I quite like the tone here, not as raw as the original though. I dont mind the Jackson J90C pickup in the Charvel although I may switch it out eventually for a Crawler (Tim's recommendation).

Quite like the backing as well, the vocals are pretty good, sounds like Dave anyway :)

ps - whats the proper way to get that sound at the start which I've done terribly with natural harmonics on 5th fret..? I tried picking behind the nut but it doesnt sound right

That sounded pretty good to me. Didn't think there was anything wrong with the playing either.

Tone wise, to my ears at least, I'd say it needed just a touch more bass, but that's a small thing. I reckon a Crawler would sound superb in that guitar.

Afraid I can't help you out with the harmonic thing. While I'm a big fan of EVH's playing, I can't play like him worth a damn.

Clip sounded very good. Nice job man.

can't help you with the bit at the start, I never bothered learning that one. Nice playing and tone, though. Maybe a little trebly/harsh/modern in tone as Simon D said, but the playing was good, and I assume you're going to switch pickups in the charvel anyway?

could be the fact that ed used the Ibanez Destroyer on that number, I believe...at least for rythym...rake from high to low behind the nut -a 100 watt plexi could help, too..and that big bomb rack thing-e...ahh..those were the days

Yeah now I listen back the tone is a bit modern sounding, although I was using the evh amp model.

Hows this, my Charvel into Laney (still sounds a bit scooped to me even though the mids were on 8 - probably the mic'ing)

Sounding good Tom - just not quite enough "balls".  You can't beat power amp tube break up for that though  ;)

Nice playing!

Loved hearing Unchained! That was played as a kind of intro music for PG last night (sorry, I'll try not to keep going on about it)

Weird, and yousendit doesnt work for you either?! When I click the Mp3 Lizard links it loads up the file straight away..

Oh and one thing I discovered this afternoon - the Eminence Legend 121 speaker is cr@p to record with! Spent ages trying to get it to sound good and could not get a semi-decent tone. G12H records nicely though, I think it still needs breaking in a bit as theres always the slightly harsh edge that wont go away.

Whilst we're on the subject of speakers again.. I doubt I'll get a new cab for a while so I might as well make the most of mine. Would putting a V30 in a cab with closed back and bass port (the bottom part of my cab, where the current G12H is) be too bassy due to the port and closed back, or could that possibly smooth out the "spikiness" which the V30 apparently has - I dont know much about cab construction and how it affects tone..

Everyone says V30s are "spiky" - I don't think that at all!  I even read someone describing the V30 as scooped recently.  Bit a change from people saying it has a "mid hump" I suppose!

The V30 to me is just big, full and meaty with a touch of extra treble when compared to other speakers.  It's a great rock speaker.  Angus and Slash can't be wrong!

The main reason I'd like to try a V30 is because of Slash - I love his tone and he apparently uses all V30s, but its just a £50 loss if I dont like it.. Cant seem to find any cabs with V30s in any shops around here.

yeah, I think my computer is eff-ed up. I got a virus a while back and had to do a complete system restore which my computer manufacturer assured me in the manual would put it back to factory state. bullshitee. I had to search for a heap of drivers on the net etc. And it's still far from perfect, as you can probably tell... :(

Ey-right Tom! I like that mate. (I too couldn' t get the 2nd btw) I do like the overdriven presets on these but I pretty much always have to dial down the treble to 0 as I don't like the modern fizz too much. The Class A presets may well capture the EVH sound better?
IMO, the V30 will sound meatier without a doubt; I bought one from Watford Valves to be honest and put in an extension cab for my Engl. Leaving the back on will focus and punch out the sound and get it tighter and middlier(if that's the right way of putting it), whereas open-backed will be get the bottom end a bit more flappy and airy.
(..would trying the harmonic around the pickup area be more successful, d'you reckon..?)
