Noob here.... Pickups for a HSS Strat???
« on: January 24, 2007, 11:56:22 PM »
Hey all, ive got myself a 2001 USA Standard Fat Strat (Alder body, maple neck & board).

Its currently got a single EMG 81 in the bridge and the output is way more then i need for the style i play.

Im looking for something that can handle both modern and vintage gain
and im wanting the singlecoils to provide the cleans (although id like the hb to be capable of the same)

The style of music i play is modern rock (i'd call it that anyway) along the lines of Smashing Pumpkins, Biffy Clyro, 3EB, Taking back sunday and RHCP but also play the classics like Led Zep, AC DC etc.

Ive had my eye on the Mule/Mothers Milk/Mothers Milk set but what do you guys think?

Oh yeh, ive searched the forum high and low but although there are alot of similar threads, the music style is different so not much help!

I'm a singer by trade so go easy on me  8)

All help much appreciated!

I'm going to buy a Strat and turbo-charge it later this year, and I'm probably going for a VHII.

If you don't like Van Halen, I wouldn't let that bother you. Eddie's classic tone was based around an original PAF -- just a good sounding, musical, not particularly high-powered humbucker. I admit I haven't played a VHII yet but from the spec, the samples I've heard, and what I know about pickups in general, it seems like it'd be a very versatile pickup, with good basic tone and the ability to handle a lot of gain.

Also, the Mule is (presumably) optimised for a Les Paul, whereas the VHII would, I guess, be designed with a superstrat in mind. Not to say that you can't put a Mule in a Strat or a VH2 in a Les Paul, of course.

For what it's worth, the music I play is pretty similar to you; some classic rock, some modern rock and pop/ rock.
Bare Knuckles owned: Mules, VHII, Rebel Yells, BKP-91, Strat 63 set, Riff Raffs.

Thanks Jonny

that gives me another angle to look at now...

I've checked out some clips and they sound good however to my ears the Mule sounds more versatile (based on the clips on the forums).

I'm gonna give Tim and the boys an email when i am in a position to order (i.e after febuarys pay day!)

Wooo, another biffy Fan, Mon the Biff!

Anywhoo, I would go with either Irish Tours or Mothers milks for some classic (but a bit more aggressive) vintage cleans, and then I would probably go for something like the mule or VHII, not too sure as I am just a single coil player really. A Mississippi Queen (HB sized P-90) would work really well too especially with some Hot Irish tours or even trilogies

wow thats an impressive list of pickups you have there Joe!!

Yes Biffy are legends wont be long now till everyone outside of scotland realises it.

Im definately gonna get the mothers milks but i am torn between the mule and VhII for the bridge.

I've got an 81 Ibanez artist thats gonna get a set of RY's in it and im gonna build a frankenstrat with apaches in so if i get the above i should be able to cover all tonal bases.

Hi MrPring. Replied to your email and then noticed your post. Yes, the Mule will do Led Zep and AC/DC brilliantly :)
