A lot of people like to open the braid and twist it into a strand that you can solder to the pot. This way you can tin it first and also you don't need to put as much heat into the pot. However, with a tele style switch you will have a lot of wire between the switch and the pot, so in this case I would either solder another wire to the braid and then to the pot, or file the top of the pot and then solder the braid directly (if you have a good soldering iron - a pot is a very good heatsink!).
