Opeth style recording with Mules and Laney (updated)
« on: February 01, 2007, 11:58:59 AM »
I posted this up a while ago using my V-Amp but I prefer this tone, it sounds much bigger  Playings a bit sloppy, my recording setup isnt exactly ideal at the minute ;)

I also expanded it a bit with a clean bit (though I dont really like clean tone, too harsh). Probably shoulda added chorus or something to it..

Chords/rhythm all on bridge Mule, leads and clean on neck Mule in my Epi LP Custom. Heres the setup (yes my guitar needs cleaning and I dont even have a mic stand yet  )

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=493678&songID=4951909

Enjoy (I hope :))

edit - re-recorded with a more aggressive tone and a nicer clean :)

Put the drive to 8, then is would be more Opeth style, but it sounds awesome none the less!

the tone's not bad, a bit bland. I've told you once, twice, A THOUSAND TIMES  . Do us a clip with the e.q. dials up around 5 or higher...please? It sounds flat because you insist on scooping out all the tone
LOVING the Mules!

Scooped? The mids are always on 8/9 :?

Its the mic and probably my mic'ing technique, cos its going straight into the soundcard. It sounds fine in the room, if I have the treble much higher its painful :P

hmmmm ok...... apparently though the built-in EQ isn't amazing on the GH50L.... thats only a rumour though, so don't shout at me for saying that!

whatever happens and whatever people say about it, i am going to get that amp VERY soon!

Turns out the EQ more interactive than I thought thanks to Indy recommending some settings :P With the bass up more it allows you to run the treble higher without making it so harsh or brittle, and as the treble is up more it doesnt sound so muddy as I thought it would due to the high bass. I'll have to re-record this clip with my new settings tomorrow

And yeah I *think* that if you use 6L6 valves it'd take away some of the british tone and make it more modern/american sounding. Best to ask people who have done it though as I've only used 6L6 in my Fender which doesnt do distortion.

the drums sound reaaaallly good.

how did you do them? or is it a pre-made backing track or something?

good stuff.

Yeah the drums sounded really good through my Koss headphone-earplug-things, not so great through my creative computer speakers.

Anywho, I use this program called Drumatik which I got off some CD. The drum samples were sent to me by Brow, I think he got them off Reason.. Really easy to program stuff but its a bit limited, you cant do much in the way of odd timings or anything, and the bpm doesnt go any higher than 200 so you cant really do really fast blastbeats or double bass type stuff..

I'll try re recording it with better tone, playing and cleans (will work on mic position to capture the big clean fender sound hopefully) tomorrow if I have time, I really cant be arsed with 2 hours of business studies and 1 hour of IT tomorrow

Anyway, what Sennheisers do you have? I want to get some half decent headphones for recording, so long as they're kinda flat sounding with good-ish isolation then it should be ok for monitoring and eq'ing etc..

Drumatik eh... might look into that.

and i look forward to the updated version lol.

ive got 555's.... really comfy, and great sound.

i emailed a few online headphone shop/sites and these were recommended for clarity and for being a good choice for rock e.t.c. as well as good all-rounders.

theyre kinda expensive, (well in the world of headphones theyre actually pretty cheap), but personally i think theyre definitely worth it.

I reckon that sounds pretty good!  You're really getting the GH50L to sound all "modern".

I just made mine sound like Angus...

Thanks :) I got a better modern sound using some different settings but I didnt get to have the master up so it sounds kinda fizzy, the recordings here anyway -

Its a really good amp, I can get all the classic Angus tones as well as GnR (took me some tweaking but I got it) all the way up to metal now  Just need to work on my mic'ing technique so I can get it to sound as good as it does in the room.

Sam, I'll have a look for the CD I have with Drumatik, I can probably figure out some way of copying it then I could send you it then email you the samples I use or something..?

^that would be excellent if you could mate, cheers.

oh and about the head-phones- just realised you mentioned isolation to some degree- the 555s are completely open so theyre pretty useless in terms of isolation.

Sounds very, very good.  I'm guessing you're using the extra gain stage and more bass when compared to a 'DC tone?

Even if I could get tones like that I'd never use them!  I guess that's why I've gone to amps that are as old as me  :D

Yeah, that was the extra gain stage on around 8 ish. My other settings are something like -

Presence 6
Bass 6-7 ish
Mids - 7
Treble - 6

Master was only on 1 :( Really need a hotplate..

I honestly never thought to try the bass that high as it sounded pretty boomy/muddy with it above 4 but raising the treble as well seems to have made the tone pretty much perfect, they complement each other well I guess..
