I have a mesa boogie heartbreaker which is a 2 channel combo amp with a switch that gives the vintage markI type tone.  It has great cleans and crunch and pretty good distortion.  However,  I am exploring other distortion sounds and have ordered keeley ds-1 and metal zone.  I may also look into a different amp like a marshall jcm 800 or 900 or TSL jcm 2000.  Can anyone recommend which one of these would be better for heavy rock and metal?   Any other amp recommendations would also be welcome.  Guitarists that i like:  van halen; RR;metallica.

If you've got a cr@pload of money spare, get a Krank Revolution for heavy rock and metal.  That thing sounds absolutely divine- I spent a good two hours playing through it and the tone is monstrous.  Granted, I only tried it out with an active EMG equipped guitar, which meant I was able to practically tear the roof of the place with distortion, but it even managed to make the cleans on that sound nice.  With some Warpigs I can only imagine how amazing the amp would sound :D

Or if you can find one in your neighbourhood....try a Diezel Herbert....awesome distortions from that thing! And also very bright cleans, to country-ish sounds!

Yeah, every good thing has its downside!

I want a Diezel also, but I don't want to get rid of my Triamp yet, so...I think I'll just stick with the Triamp for now, because otherwise it costs me way too much money  :D

If you want expensive, but good tones, check out Bogner too  8)

So, now you lost it guys, he was asking for Marshall around 500 GBP, so could you stop recommending all this bouteek stuff please?

Oh by the way, 5150 might also be interesting in that price range if cleans are less relevant.

Not really, he mentioned some marshalls, and because it was an example, you can take that price class as an example, the price tag wasn't a hard demand; I cannot find that in the topic.
Only thing I said; try something else than only Marshall, maybe some other brand is better for what you want, that's all, and that can be a €500000 amp, or maybe a €150,-, who knows?

Thanks for the suggestions guys.  I am leaning towards the jcm800 reissue or hte new marshall vintage modern with reverb and effects loop.  It is a single channel but with a switch to introduce another preamp tube for extra distortion(at least thats what i surmised from the marshall site).

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! The reissues are beyond shite!

"Thick Rythm Clip Marshall JVM" sounds the best to me :)
