I'm seriously considering getting a seven string guitar in order to add another dimension to my musical playing... I tune down a lot anyway, so another extra low string that means I don't have to tune down as much is always going to be a bonus :D

My question is this: does anyone have any recommendations for good seven string guitars that aren't too expensive? I'm not going to set a budget just so I can see what kind of stuff gets suggested, but needless to say a BlackMachine isn't going to be an option- I'm a student, I don't have 2 grand lying around to spend on guitars :D

I've got my eye on a Schecter at the moment as well, so can anyone verify whether they're any good or whether they're a pile of wank? It's the Blackjack C-7 I'm looking at.

If you're looknig at Schecters then a 7 string Hellraiser would do you proud.

Play nicely and have some decent equipment while being cheap.

A better Ibanez 7 string is the new RG8427-FE. There's a black stained flame top as well if you don't like the burst.

A snip at only 925 quid (at todays ludicrous exhange rate).

That looks like a nice Ibanez, gingataff- with a tremolo bridge I see. Where can you actually find those?

I've recently bought an Ibanez RG1527gk and it was a lot easier to get used to the extra string than I thought it would be. The neck is quite thin and really easy to play. The only downside is that it hasn't got an extended scale so if you want to go any lower than A or G on the 7th string it might strugle a bit - even with thicker guage strings.
The Schecters are supposed to be good though - the necks are chunkier than the Ibanez's (Ibanii, not sure what the plural of Ibanez is!???).

What ever you decide, post some pics (when you have fitted the BKPs which you are obviously going to get for it!

Not cheap but the ESP LTD SC-607 and 607B Steph Carpenter models are seriously nice (and hard tailed). I also quite like the new hardtailed Munky signature from Ibanez. Unfortunately there are very few mid point 7 strings though :(

The Rusty Cooley 7 string is beautiful, but if the last NAMM was anything to go by, it won't be available for a few months

It's a shame that he's got such a huge waiting list.

If you're budget's more around the £1k mark, then an Ibanez K7 is a nice guitar, although I personally wouldn't get it just because it's got someone else's name on it.

Carvin make some nice cheap 7 strings aswell, and ESP have an awesome Viper 7 string in the LTD series.

Depends if you mind Koreans or not, and your budget.

There are more 7 strings around now then I think there have ever been.

In theory I could order a US Soltero from the states and make a huge saving, but they still haven't filled all the orders they took for it at the LAST NAMM.

Going back to my recent comments about production guitars generally involving a degree of compromise for the buyer, ultimately they've ALL got someone else's name on them, they're all someone else's idea of what makes a good guitar. Why should a signature model be any different? Indeed, it may be that a signature model is closer to your ideal than the standard model.

You're right, but I'm talking aesthetically, not phillosophically :P

The fact that anyone that sees it would tell me - Hey, that's the guitar made for that guy from Korn!!! - Bound to annoy me, especially since I don't even particularly like Korn.
