Found these guys after a mate of mine saw them in Harrods:

Anyone else know any particularly weird custom guitars?

Not that this is particularly weird, but I've heard of a luthier who makes replicas of 58 Les Pauls, which are incredibly exact apparently.

Something to do with X-ray and cavaties, and illegal laquer.

Anyway, seems just  his phone number exchanges hands for £300 :p

That's not actually as hard as some people would have you believe - there's a lot of mystique and plain BS circulating about vintage guitars, and you just have to look at pics of Tim's guitars with BKPs in to see a breathtaking Les Paul replica. I've got a replica of my own in the works (that will feature A.IV Mules) that will be far more accurate than any £4000 VOS Historic, and cost a damn sight less to make too. I'll document the progress when possible, hopefully by friday my Brazilian Rosewood fretboard blank cut in the late 50's should arrive, which will be awesome.

Sounds like my dentist
Seems to involve X-rays, cavities and me paying £300 every time I ring him

Does this count?

That looks like a Synthax that someone covered in milk bottle tops and posterpaint.
My vote for wierdness goes for the Gittler guitarhttp://www.vintageguitar.com/classifieds/item_detail.asp?ItemID=121386
This particular pic is one that actually has a neck (I think it may be removable, many were 'neckless').

Yeah, I think you can take off the black plastic body/neck moulding and just use what's left of the metal, the frets are joined to the metal bar that runs along the neck. If your technique is good (ie classical style) you can put your thumb on the back of the metal rod and play that way.

That's basically what it is - a synthaxe modified into a sample-based percussion instrument.

Ahhh! I was trying to find a good picture of the Gittler - surely the ugliest guitar ever made...
