here's a tip..... go to the damage control website, and download the video for the demonizer, it's amazing what it can do! if i had good money to spend on a distortion preamp, this is what i would get, bar none. i bet it would turn my MG into a monster. It's VERY metal.

I have a trilogy of Demonizers...one set for clean, one for heavy crunch, and the third dialed-up for mid-boosted solo tone.  I use a buffered signal splitter pedal to switch between them, and all three run into a small mixer w/ effects, and a pair of active studio monitors.  I live in a small apartment, so this setup works for me better than a traditional amp, and sounds 1000 times better than digital modeling, imo.  the Demonizer has an excellent sounding direct out jack that has the thump and resonance of a cab.

anyway, yes the Demonizer can do the full gamut of metal tones, from vintage to modern.  I'm into old-school speed metal and NWOBHM and it took me less than 3 minutes to get "the tone".  the Demonizer can also produce a most beautiful clean tone...I love electric clean, can't live without it.

these pedal/preamps are pricey and some may find their price tag impractical , but for my ears and playing environment, the Demonizer is a true bargain.  I'll get some clips made if you'd like.

For the price of those you could probably buy a good amp distortion.

And it would probably be worse than the Demonizers.

If they had a clip of the Demonizer with a non scooped tone then i might be persuaded, but the tones on that page are horrible.

imo it sounds like $%&#ing shitee! those clips are hideous :? - it's hollow, fizzy, and completely characterless.
I guess it's all a matter of taste though!

My Mesa V-Twin pedal with a TS808 in front of it eats it for breakfast!

yep...and I tried a shiteeload of low and extra-low wattage tube combos and preamp/power amp combinations, and a variety of cabs but none of them worked to my satisfaction.  I also tried the digital modeling route but I didn't like the tone.  (I came close with a PODxt into an Atomic tube amp...but the massive low-end and midrange punch would have guaranteed me an eviction.)  anyway, my Demonizers/Mixer/Studio Monitor setup, while pricey, works perfectly for me.

guys....take this for what it's worth, but...

the sound clips of the Demonizer on the Damage Control site do NOT do it the slightest shred of justice!  these sound clips are to the Demonizer what paint-by-numbers is to art.

Did you try any solid state or hybrid amps?

I made a couple of quick (and sloppy) clips...

forgot to mention I used a 1990 Gibson SG with rewound pups.
