Odd thing with my amp
« on: February 08, 2007, 11:40:32 AM »
Ok I bought a old black label Boss BF2 Flanger off ebay and stuck it on my board (using a daisy chain power supply - which is in a plug socket on the other side of the room to the amp's plug) - it went into my Blues Junior (which is a few months old).

I am using planet waves cables and Venom patch cables

After playing gloriously for a while the bottom E string started getting a muffle and crackle when I played it - the crackle then migrated to everything up to the G string - when I took the lead out I got huge interference noise - then the amp lost volume.

I unplugged everything and replugged it all in and it carried on - but about 5 minutes later everything was back to normal.

The only time I heard this before was on a MOSFET amp when the power amp went - Does this mean my power tubes are going?  Or was this just a bit of freak RF/electrical interference?

BTW - there is no heating in my guitar room so its very cold.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like you lost yer power valves. The sound gets all crackly and nasty ... like the sonic equivalent of someone giving you Doritos when you ordered nachos ... crunchy, but in a bad way.

In my Rivera, that amp would work no matter what condition the power valves were in, but the sound would just get awful. When I pulled out the power valves one time because the amp sounded like butt, there was nothing left to the heaters in two of the valves! They had completely disintergrated!!

Might be worth trying with a different guitar and a different cable too (one at a time) and seeing if the problem is still there.  Always worth exploring the cheap options first.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Check everything is seated OK in the amp.

Repeated heating and cooling can cause components to creep out of sockets.

With an amp in a cold room and the valves heating up, it could be an issue.

Thats the first time I've read someone comparing sound to food!

You often hear sound described in many ways... airy, thick, muddy, but that is the first time i've heard it described in food terms :D

well done. you brightened my day.

As for the topic... sorry cant help except check all conections which has been said. Sorry
