Bit surprised at the Pod not getting you into the ballpark...you tried its "Insane" patch?
Thinking of it, the Behringer V-Amp2 is much cheaper: though its noise floor is higher and doesn't do cleans very well, I was and still am very taken with its distortion patches; the recto is excellent IMO.
Hmmm...just a thought too: if using either of these, make sure the unit knows whether its set for "Studio", "headphones" or "live". I remember being decidedly naffed off with the Pod's sound until I realised the fizziness was the result of it believing it was in a live setting, when it should have been set for headphones.
