Hmmm...

It's funny, but most conversation about guitar tone seems to centre on old rock music... I guess that's when the classic tones were recorded.

Still, what Bareknuckle humbucker would you guys pick for the bridge position of an HSS Strat for modern rock tones? I don't mean drop-tuned metal (certainly not lower than D anyway), just rock.

Stuff like Foo Fighters, Feeder, Green Day, the latest Lostprophets album, Fallout Boy, My Chemical Romance, Jimmy Eat World, Muse, AFI... OK, that list is plenty long enough.

I'm not sure I even like some of those those guitar tones, to be honest. They're a bit saturated for me. I'm just thinking out loud really.

My guess'd be something hot PAF-ish... Rebel Yell, VHII, or Mule.

Does anyone know the specs to the Rebel Yell? They're not posted on the site yet. I'm curious about it myself.

For modern rock, the Rebel Yell would work quite well, as stated above. I would also recommend the Crawler for that role.

For a hot contemporary tone I would check out a Holydiver.

I'm quite surprised by this. I wouldn't argue with someone who knows so much more about pickups than me, but I thought most of the gain in modern rock was coming from the amp, not the pickup. I would've gone for a low output pickup to retain clarity through all that MESA/Boogie gain.

The Rebel Yell does spring immediately to mind -- though I wouldn't describe it really as terribly "PAF-ish". The Crawler is pretty much "hot PAF-ish" (though only "ish", because of the slight boost to the mids over PAF tonality). To characterize the differences between RY and Crawler in simplistic terms, I'd say the RY is "brighter" and the Crawler is "darker" ....

I've got Crawlers in my LP :) though I only need to hear those Steve Stevens clips again to be convinced that the RYs kill at modern rock sounds. :) Both are good, depends on exactly what yer going fer .....
