Hi everyone, I'am going to change the Burstbuckers in my R8 for probably BKP Mules or the PG set ( I presume PG means Peter Green ) The sound I am after is the classic Peter Green. Any info from Forum members much appreciated.

Just to explain: BKP do a Peter Green voiced humbucker - as used by Gary Moore - its a custom job, but with BKP that just means emailing them or telephoning them and stating what you want.
BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

what is the spec on the PG set compared to Mules or Stormy Mondays?

I've got a Crawler that I'm gonna replace with something more vintage - just don't need anything hot for what I'm doing at the minute.

I believe the PG is a modified Stormy Monday set (I'm still waiting for mine).
So many pickups, so little time

I have had a set of these for some while and have to say that they are absolutely ASTOUNDING!!!!!!!

I LOVE Low Output Pickups anyway, but These are something else again.
The Peter Green SOUND is there in Spades and is actually incredibly versatile. Before having these I had wondered whether they "Could Have Been a Bit ONE TRICK Ponies"......NO WAY!!!!!!!!

Has to be said......I am SO struck by these that I have already spoken to Tim about a slightly modded set for another Guitar. The Mod being.....NOT The PG Bobbin Flip etc....Just as a Straight Humbucking Set.

Put it this way.......Between me Banging on about these on a.n.other Forum...AND the people who have played my PG Set......
TIM? You're going to be Busy!!!!!!  :D

All The Best

Hi Rob, I've just ordered a set of PG's after speaking to Tim on the phone. I would like to know how you wired them up. What I mean is did you turn the neck pickup round so that the pole pieces are facing the bridge as in Peter's Les Paul and have wired the tone pots 50's style.

Hi Ya......Here Ya Go

Yes to one....as you can see.
NO to the Tone Pots, tried em that way and found MORE flexibilty .... well to MY ears with them wired as standard.

There has been considerable discussion about all this over at the Les Paul Forum......seems to be split 50/50 on the 50's wiring? I suggest you try both and see what appeals to you personally.

Enjoy them when they arrive.......they are STUNNING. :D

Thanks for posting a pic of your Les Paul with PG's, can't wait for mine to arrive. BTW your Lester is very close to mine in colour and flame what year is yours. My Les Paul is a 2001 R8  serial No 8-2111.

very nice - the choice just got harder.  what would you say is different about them compared to the Stormy Monday or Mule?

fwiw, I like the 50s wiring best - I even use it on my Tele Custom where it made an even bigger difference.

I was a big poo-poo'er of fancy tone caps for years but I got some old Sprague caps for my Les Paul last month and they are WAY better than anything else I've tried - they don't really dull the tone like most caps do, the tone just gets fatter as you turn down the tone pot.  Below '2' it's mud but thats to be expected.

I am surprised to be posting this response to my mules, but i dont like their low output sound in my santana 3.  It feels like i'm reaching for a tone and not quite getting there.  I have ordered the abraxas set  for this guitar.  Could someone tell me what type of music and with what type of gear they are using their mules?

Hi Jimm,GREENYFAN and HEAVIER THAN HELL

Believe it or NOT....That's a 2006 Standard that I bought for the princely sum of........£400 !!!!!!

Don't get me wrong here......I'm NOT saying that the 50's Wiring Conversion is bad....Far From it.....But for "me" personally....I preferred it as it was.....Just a Personal Thing with these Pickups. I have another LP (a 2003 R08) that I have converted and THAT one sounds Majestic!

Now that one.....has Mules.  Here She Is...............................

This one had what I believe to have been Burstbuckers in it originally? The NECK Pickup was really Good.....But the Bridge Unit was like an Ice Pick. I swapped out to a Set of Mules and have never looked back. The Neck Pickup on the Mules is actually pretty close to the original BB, just with the added Bare Knuckle "openness". The Bridge unit is everything that I wanted....Much nicer and reacts superbly to the Volume and Tone Controls.

I have various Chums who have also tried Mules in various Guitars....sometimes with NOT quite the success that I have had? I would "suspect" that a Mule REALLY shines in a Les Paul (Maple Cap etc) but Tim would answer that far better than I. The worst case I have heard was when one was popped into an SG......But that was only to "MY" Ears...others may have found it absolutely Fine.

I LOVE Low Output Pickups....But again.....that's "my" opinion. I have heard so many High (or HOT) pickups over the years that have just coloured the sound too much for my tastes. Case in point being EMGs in Flying Vees.  A Vee with a Low Output Pickup is an absolute MONSTER.

OK....I play most things, but my comfort zone is Blues, Blues Rock and "some" Country Stuff as and when required. Amps have always been Matamp and I find that the Mules work very well in combination with them.
But then.....I have BKPs in every Guitar I have now and admit that they ALL sound stunning through this Rig. I recently loaned my "Rory" Clone Strat to a mate who has never experienced BKs and it's loaded with "Irish Tours".....well it WOULD be wouldn't it?

He's completely Blown away by them and is in the process of getting BKs for ALL his Guitars......Just wish he'd return "Rory"!!!!!!!

Well,

I had a chance to turn up the volume and test out the new mules .  Once i can get over the desire for all my guitars to be able to play all types of music(i like versatility so sue me  ) i  think i  can like these mules in my santana.  It certainly has a nice full clean and crunch tones.  Even with my keeley ds1 the distortion doesnt get past a heavy crunch, but it sounds warm and rich.  I'll keep the mules in the santana for now.  Now i have to decide what to do with the abraxas set thats on the way
