Nailbombs or Alnico Warpigs for custom guitar
« on: February 17, 2007, 07:36:47 AM »
Ah... the age old question.  Which set of awesome high output BKP's to choose from.

The guitar is similar to a blackmachine with a rosewood neck/ebony fretboard and a swamp ash/ebony topped wolfgang-shaped body (not thin like a blackmachine's though).

I have a set of nailbombs in a yamaha aes620 and I think they are the shite but I am not sure if alnico warpigs or another set of nailbombs would be better suited to this guitar.  I mostly play with mid to high gain through a laney lc50 and dig tones like queens of the stone age/kyuss, high on fire, old sepultura, heartwork-era carcass, brutal truth.  What pickups would get me closest to a high on fire - blessed black wings sound.  The hairy stoner metal/rock sound.  The nailbombs seem to do this well but I think I've heard that the warpigs can do this sound better.

I can't swap the bridge nailbomb out of my yamaha because it is f-spaced so I'm looking at another set of BK's cause they simply kick ass.

Opinions would be appreciated.

Also how would a pig90 do for some of these sounds.  Does anybody have one?

whaddyaknow, we're both canadiuhns and have the same taste in music hahaha.  pig90 is a single coil, not reccommended unless you want to have alot of buzz.

I love the high on fire tone...  AND i'm even writing a tab out for blessed black wings.

His tone is gibson les paul --> matamp GT120 i --> 4x12 and a carver solid state poweramp --> 2 more 4x12's
2 emience 4x12s and 1 celestion 4x12.
The recorded tone is pure Matamp awesomeness.  But for pickups, i'd recommend alnico pig.

Depends on your amp though, what gear are you packin?
my maxon OD 808 really DOES make poop sound good

50 watt laney lc50, very marshally but better cleans than older marshals and slightly different distortion - little more british sounding.  Loaded with a tone tubby ceramic 12 hemp cone speaker and a power scaling kit is installed in the amp that functions like a hot plate but better.

I'm just a little unsure exactly how the woods in the guitar will be.  I have heard from many sources that rosewood necks are very resonant and middy and I think the swamp ash and ebony will help with the lows and highs.

Whereabouts in canada are you?  I'm living in calgary and riding the alberta boom at the moment.

London, goin to Western at the moment.

For your woods, swamp ash is a tad brighter than alder, think fender strat sound.  Ebony is super effin bright, even brighter sounding than maple, my favorite fingerboard wood cuz its smooth and cuts out the mud.  Rosewood is nice and warm which should get your mids and low mids.

The wood of your guitar is going to focus your tone towards mids and highs, so a warpig will be a nice compliment so you can get some bassy tones out of it.

I'm not quite familiar with your Laney, but if it sounds anything like a marshall, you will want heavy ass low end, strong mids, and trebel clear enough that it balances out the tone.  Since your guitar will already have the mids and trebel in the wood, warpig should do it.

Well, I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with a warpig set but it is hard to choose since they make so many f'n killer pickups.  I just listened to somebodys clean warpig clips and they sounded killer so they do seem fairly versatile.  I'll probably order up a set tonight or tomorrow since all my guitar parts are coming within the next few weeks.
