I agree that if you want great clean single channel amps are out of the question, however good they are for pure sounds. Another bad thing for assigning neck pup for clean is you'd only get smooth clean. What if you want a jangly clean?
Laney VH100R is £600 exact in most online shops, much cheaper if you can find one on eBay (I couldnt, damn it). Great amp really versatile and awesome sounds. Im still experimenting with the set ups but the distortion is brutal (as in heavy, not saturated), think Opeth. I prefer the clean on the VH to my Fender. The crunch is great for some bluesy stuff but its not the amp's forte. Dont be put off by the 100 watts (I was, before trying it) it smoothes out nicely at normal practice level. Hell, it sounds great even at bedroom volume. The only negative is the weight it weighs a tonne.

Fail that, if you want a full on high death metal gain go for a Fireball if you can find one at a good price.
