Goodbye Vintage 30-Hello Greenback

I've never been too impressed with V30's (OK in a 4X12 for grindy stuff) and swapped the one out of my Cornford Harly for a Heritage (pre rola spec) greenback G12M 20 watter.

Wished I'd done it ages ago as the difference is night and day- lovely and warm with serious, serious crunch tones. Still breaking it in but I'll post some clips soon as.

Good stuff, i changed my V30 for a G12H and was much happier with the tone.Much warmer and less spikey!

Would you say you have to turn the amp higher to get the same volume with the G25M than the V30?

Yes its noticeable-sensitivity is 4db lower than V30 and 2db lower than the standard G12M greeback, but for me this is a good thing on a recording amp-cranked tone at lower  volume. The crunch tone just puts a huge smile on my face :P

Is the bass tighter or looser with the Greenbacks, compared to the V30's?

The bass (I've only installed it earlier toady so its first impressions) is looser in a kind of EVH brown sound type looseness- if you know what I mean. I always found the V30 to be harsh.

Apparently Celestion cloned the original 60's greenback right down to the type of glue used- an animal one, sorry vegetarians 8)

You know, i love the sound of a distorted marshall through V30's.

But i've never been impressed with it's cleans...

Maybe it'd be a good idea to have two 2x12's, one for clean, one for lead...

can you estimate how old that v30 was??I am about to swap my greenbacks out with 4 v30's from a mesa boogie cab-cel. supposedly has been using different paper as of late and certain v30's are reportedly harsh until about 30-40 hrs of being pushed

Shaman, its had lots of hours, had it from new in 2001.

I don't know how these Heritage G12m's compare with the chinese G12m's but they're seriously good- just can't get over how good they crunch!

As these are only rated at 20 watts I wouldn't consider using them in an 4X12 as a 1/2 stack with a 100 watter...........

cool..thanks!I love the vintage greens I have in my 4/12 MArshall cab from 1974-perrrfect with the 50 watt  marsh head...but, I have started running my boogie mark IV in stereo, and the greenies get a little flubby-dubby-gonna pull them , keeep them, and insert v30s for the added pwer capability..if i need the greenbacks, I can just swap out..thinking about running 2 greens and 2 v30's...hmmmmmm..man, this stuff can keep a man busy!!

I use 100w heads, plus an overdrive in front, through a 2x12 or a 4x12.  No way the Greenbacks are any use to me!!!

I have V30s in both my cabs and I love them.  They do take some breaking in though, and I find they need a bit of time to "warm up" when you use them too.  They always sound better after half an hour or so of playing, much like amps do.

Interesting comparison though - cheers for posting  :D

I have a Cornford Carrera (with V30) and I don't find this at all. I find the amp quite warm overall.  My guitar teacher has a Riviera, and a Marshall Blusbreaker and I find both very harsh compaired to the Cornford, (I'm not sure what speakers the Marshal and Rivera are using)

Additionally, I would not want to lose any of the clean headroom of the Carrerra with a less sensitive speaker.  So as I use plenty of clean I would only consider changing to a speaker of the same sensitivity.

I'm not recommending everyone changes out their V30's but I've always felt that the Harly lacked something and IMHO the crunch/breaking up tones    (which is what I mostly play) of the Heritage greenback  is in a different league compared to the V30, but as the Americans say 'your mileage may vary'................

When my sm57 is returned I'll post some clips.
