Do I lose my lifetime-warranty removing black insulation cvr

I'm a proud owner (received today) of a VHII humbucker.

But I'm looking at the wiring and this is what I see:
- one ground wire
- one black wire
- one red wire
and it seems that the white and green wire are connected together (under some black tape of wire-shield).

1st question:
Can someone tell me if this is braided two conductor of four conductor?


2nd question:
I want to connect this pickup on a five-selector. Do I have the right pickup and/or wiring?

With a 5-way switch you can make the pickup coil tap. So, yes you have the right pickup.

The green and white wire are connected to each other and it seems to be shielded in black tape or so.

It looks like I can only use (soldering) the black, red and the ground....

(1) four conductor.  the two taped together are to connect the two coils in series (i.e. standard humbucking configuration)

(2) yes, this pickup is fine to use with a 5-way switch (assuming we're talking about a Strat-type guitar?).  the red wire will go to the selector switch, the black and 'bare' wires both connect to ground on the back of the pots.

Adding a small webcam pic:

Upper (unshielded) wire is black.

Than 2 wires connected together (shielded?): White and Green.

Lower (unshielded) wire is red.

The most right (totally unshielded) wire is the ground.


Please don't let the shades fool you....

ok assuming you've got the same pickup configuration as me (HH with 5-way switch so position 4 is inside coils of both pickups and position 2 is neck in parallel... if you have HSH then disregard this post).  for the bridge pickup all you need to do is remove the black insulation cover from the green and white wires and attach it to the switch for the coil tap - you don't need to separate the two wires.  the green and white wires on the neck pickup however need to be separated in order for the pickup to operate in parallel

I think the black insulation cover on the green and white wires has confused me. It's my first time opening a guitar.....

I also think that removing this cover is the solution to my problem.

Final question:

well even with HSH, if you want to split the coils you'll have to take the insulation off the green and white wires and solder them to the pickup switch.  make sure you remember where all the wires were attached from the old pickup and pay attention to the wiring diagram that came with the pickup and you shouldn't have any problems

No, I'm sure you don't - the insulation's only there to stop the pickup shorting out if the green/white wires come into contact with other wires or metal parts.
