A quicky please... Magnet guru?
« on: March 18, 2007, 05:15:46 PM »
I just pulled this magnet out of my bridge pup. It is supposed to be an A5 but I am a bit surprised by the color (first 2 pictures). All Alnico magnet I seen before were silvery (as in the third picture).

This one is clearly as dark as the ceramic magnets I got from the stock Epi pickups.

Is colour a good indicator of magnet material?

A quick a-hundred-percent-sure reply would be nice as I am just about to re-pot the pickups and put them back in the guitar. I replaced this black magnet by a ceramic one. If it was already one, I will experiment with something else.

Cheers

PS: Sorry for the quality of the pics!

After a few research on the web and looking a wee bit harder at the magnets,  the wide faces were quite dark, and actually full of cr@p (wax among other stains), looking dark and dull like a ceramic magnet. But the thin edges were closer to those of a A5 magnet, with a silvery shade. So I think it was indeed an A5 but I guess I will be fixed when I play the guitar again (didn't have time to re-assemble everything today).
