pickups fpr 335 copy blues and old fart rock
« on: March 19, 2007, 10:07:53 PM »
One of the other guitarists in my band has bought a very nice 335 copy, but the pickups lack bite, sustain and crunch.
He has been thinking about Mississippi Queens, but is put off by the hum. Any suggestions for humbuckers with bite and growl would be welcome.

I would say Riff Raffs would suit what you're after.  Clear and punchy with a touch of extra bite.  They're the classic SG pickup, but would work well in a 335.  They're in the style of Patent Number Gibson pickups which were produced in the mid to late 60s and would have been fitted to 335s of that era.

I have unpotted alnico II Stormy Mondays in my 335 and they sound great (Tim played it and loved the way that it sounded).  They do not squeal even when driven hard, and they will push the amp plenty for blues and classic rock tones.  Don't think because they are the lowest output BK humbucker that they don't push!  They also have the advantage of letting the guitar tone come through too.  If you put higher gain pickups in a semi-acoustic the sound will get very mushy (voice of experience here!).
So many pickups, so little time

"Driven hard" is relative, but the Stormy Mondays in a 335 do sound great.

+ 1 for the Alnico II Stormy Mondays ...  :D

Just be aware that Stormy Mondays are very sweet and round sounding, pure blues in the B.B.King / Snowy White style.

Twinfan has an valid point that Riff Raffs are an interesting option if you want more bite and snap.
