Competition dancing!
« on: March 21, 2007, 11:11:08 PM »
A close friend of mine and I have decided to start competition dancing in latin style (chachacha, rumba, jive, samba, maybe mambo, paso doble etc.). :) She used to dance acrobatic rock&roll for 8 years and I've been dancing latin for one year and rock&roll since summer. We tend to dance r&r together and have been attending a Cuban salsa course as well. We get along very well both on the dance floor and in real life. We both like to be playful and have learnt how to move together, how to lead and be led.

There's a new dance school nearby. We have enroled for a beginners' course so that she can learn the basics I haven't taught her. We're also taking private lessons to concentrate more on the technical side and be more analytic etc., later we'll start competition training.

The lessons are fun and challenging at the same time, you can always find movements you need to work on. Competition and endurance training is led by the head of the school, he's an older and more experienced dance tutor, he's said to be a really nice guy. Compared to the other dance school I've been attending (largest school in Budapest) this one is small but well-equipped (large, well-lit dance hall with mirror walls and a good sound system) and our teachers are really good - strict but very positive and encouraging. Here's a pic. 8)

I can't wait till the next lesson! ;)

Does anyone here like to dance? :)

I highly recommend you trying a dance course (latin, ballroom, boogie-woogie, salsa, hip-hop, musical, etc., whathever you like)... it's great fun, gives you a better sense of rythm, more control over your body, and generally more self-confidence, especially at parties. ;)

No.

Sorry, Peter.  I'm sure it's good exercise, I know it impresses the ladies, and deep down maybe a little bit of me would like to be able to trip the light fantastic.

But it's a self-consciousness thing.  And the music is awful.

Just what I'm looking for... a playful woman who knows how to be led..

Seriously, I totally agree with you.

I took latin lessons for a while a few years ago and I must say it was FANTASTIC fun! No way was I your standard but what a blast I had...

Enjoy :)

Hey Peter, dancing is my WORST fear. I am paranoid of dancing, mainly for the reasons Philly Q mentioned. I think I'll stick to playing music for the time being!

I am with Philly on this-I just am not a dance type-not built for it. I admire people who can do it and the skill involved.I do like Latin music though the ballroom type is, for me, a clean up version of the real thing. I have known many people over the years who have done it and watched them  and the pleasure they got and the skill they had was enjoyable to witness even if, for me, it wasn't my thing. Good on you Peter.

I love to dance salsa and merengue having lived for over 30 years in south america. I learned with the best, on the slumps of the city, three days parties with aguardiente(firewater) and rum, it was a great time to be around. My kids have been taking dancing lessons for a few years now , and recently ballroom dancing, we travel a lot. I gather from the photos that's what you're doing . Man.... dancing is great, I am glad you love it. Best to you, and let us know how it goes. "se me olvido que te olvide a mi que nada se me olvida....a mi que nada se me olvida" :D

I met my wife doing salsa  :D It's great fun, really improves your rhythm, and because it's female heavy all the girlies want to dance with you    We tried tango for a little while, but it wasn't really us, so now we're back with the salsa.
Not built for it? I'm 6'2" and 15 stone
