Need pickup help replacing EMGs with these needs
« on: March 22, 2007, 02:58:49 AM »
Hi guys
I have one of my LP customs loaded with  EMGs going through my JCM800 using a Keeley Sd-1 to OD it. It sounds good. But recently played my other the Custom with JB in bridge and it (obviously) lower ouptut but I heard more string definition. Clarity. When I played the EMGs I dig them but its slighty cold.... and how do I put this like there was no clarity not mushy.. but like distortion static. Harsh.

I want to replace EMGs them but want something stronger then the JB Pickup which was cool in the other one but for this LP I want metal but controlable, little warmer and clarity and balls.

Bareknuckles Miracle Man? Cold Sweat? SD Distortion but this might be trebly?
Dimarzios.... Suhrs Aldrich?

BTW I love the neck EMG85. People call it muddy but I love a fat pup in the neck so I need to replace this too. Singing thick tone.

I'm not as well qualified as TO to comment, since I don't play much metal, but from the tone you described, I'd recommend a calibrated Cold Sweat set.

Wouldn't the MM still be a little cold due to the ceramic magnet. I know I love the MM but find the distortion to be a little clinical. Wouldn't it be better to warm up the tone a little by going for something with an Alnico V like a WP or HD?

It's not really a subject I'm confident with so by all means tell me I'm wrong but from what I've learned on this forum that seems to be the case.

I've had no such issues with my Miracle Man. In fact, the leads that I cut last week using a Miracle Man in an all maple guitar didn't sound clinical at all, and that flies in the face of accepted Internet 'wisdom' that maple is overly bright and ceramic mags don't work well in maple.

The guitar/amp/pickup in question:

I have found the Miracle Man to sound very organic for a pickup that can melt faces.

Interesting. Hey Twilight is that a real ESP Lynch guitar? I heard there heavy? Is the neck fat like Gibson or on small side?

Regarding the CS. Would they be more powerful then the JB? The JB looks higher looking at spec numerically.

Yes.

It is!

Thinner profile than a Gibbo, longer scale length, wider nut width, bigger fret wire.
