JCM 800 Plexi Tone in a Box
« on: March 22, 2007, 08:43:21 PM »
Guys im considering one of these to get for a Plexi Tone. Carl Martin Plexitone, box of Rock, Crunchbox, Fulltone OCD. Which do you guys think does it the best?
You can use these clips as a reference where i am coming from. Im looking for the crying tone it has.

Thanks, and also if you guys have any others to recommend just shoot. My choice for now is Carl Martin Plexitone.

i'm pretty sure that a "crying" tone can be achieved by soloing in any minor scale :P I havent tried any of the pedals you mention I'm afraid, but i can only say good things about my experiences with Fulltone.

The Carl Martin is brilliant for that kind of tone.

Yeah Plexitone is sure great for that but i just realised about EHX English Muffin, it cost about the same and will it do it as well or better. And Zvex Box of Rock cost even lesser. Hmmm decisions, decisions.

what type of amp are you playing? - thats gonna effect things alot.

I've only heard the BOR from what you listed - it sounded good but the bass seemed a bit on the loose side.

Well i am using a Peavey Bandit 112, sounds descent. Saving up for a Ceriatone amp. http://www.ceriatone.com
Maybe getting a Marshall Clone. If i play at a Studio mostly using Peavey JSX which sounds good on it's own.
SO for the mean time, i am just looking for a pedal to do a Plexitone. SOme i can try, some like the  rodenberg OD i cant.

noone's replied for a while because you're playing through a bandit, and you should be saving for a new amp before a pedal  :P

Well i don't find it a need to change amp at the moment, as its enough for me for now in my small humble apartment. When i really need a good amp i will just hit to the studio and go bonkers on the Peavey JSX Marshall JVM, Fender Hot Rod. So amp change is a last choice. Plus if i invest on pedals i can still bring it down to the studio to use it as amp is abit heavy to be carrying around.

I keep hearing Great Things about The Box of Rocks on the Les Paul Forum.
Mind you.......2 Years ago all you EVER heard about was Mike Fuller's OCD!

I really think that you need to try as many different Pedals as you can before coming to any major decision? I know that it can be hard, especially finding the shall we say....More Exotic Boutique Pedals.

Depending on your style of Music..... And allowing that we are talking about a Peavey (NOTHING Wrong with Peaveys in the main!) I'd suggest trying a few of the more Readily available Units as well as the ones you've mentioned?

A Mate uses a 2X12 Peavey Combo and reckons that he can get a very usable "Big" Sound using the humble Rat. I personally am a Tube Screamer Fan, but then I am NOT a Heavy Player, more Classic Blues Rock. The other Pedal that just about Everyone seems to rate VERY Highly is the Digitech Bad Monkey.

I have used Fulltone Gear and I quite like "some" of Mike's products, but not all. I was so disappointed with a Fulldrive that I moved it out very quickly. I have tried an OCD that a Mate has, now that has possibilities, BUT.......I now see that there is an Upgrade (Version 3) so I have no idea as to what that will sound like?

It's such a subjective thing, I might love something, you try it and find you hate it? I gave up making sweeping recommendations years ago when it comes to Pedals. Bit like recommending a Restuarant isn't it? You go there and have a Great Meal, send a friend who then spends the next week or so telling you all about his attack of Food Poisoning LOL.
So much so........That these days there are ONLY 3 things that I'll openly recommend to anyone.

Bare Knuckles Pickups (Of Course!)
Matamp Amps
Keeley Modded Tube Screamers

That's it!!

Far Safer that way believe me! :D
