Another guitar dilema!
« on: March 23, 2007, 11:01:46 PM »
Ok choosing guitars again i'll make it simple.

Secondhand USA Kramer Baretta £299 - $%&#ing quality price! OFR 1 hum 1 volume, top notch parts as you would expect from a USA built guitar, but not very versatile.

A Les Paul - Most likely Jap Tokai - More versatile and my prefered wood, but a lot more expensive and i might want a trem a few months later!

Both do 80's metal and heavy metal, i want a guitar to keep though i don't want to have to sell it a few months later, my Jap Tokai Explorer is the best sounding guitar i have ever played that's why it has stayed on board and the others flogged.

I've allways been more of an SG man than a Les Paul man.

Just can't get the point in having a single cutaway. Seems so needlessly restricting.

Go for the Les Paul and the versatility, once you've "pimped" it with a whammy bar later on you'll be glad you went down the long road rather than the short, quick gratification route.

Although I agree with NP, get an SG: a menace and get a floyd-rose fitted

It depends... do you already have a guitar with a floyd? IMO, you should get the one that fills the biggest hole in your collection...

yeah a LP will be similar (but not the same) in its sound and design to your explorer.
If you havent got a superstrat you definately need one, and that's a great price. Unless of course you just dont like superstrats

i'd go with the LP for the versatility, as said before, you can always fit a trem later, i think schaller actually make trem systems that can go straight on to a Les Paul without the need of any routing etc.

Are you sure that Kramer Baretta's any better than your HD-loaded Ibanez, Joe?

You need to be careful with Kramers as well. There's a lot of modern Korean ones being passed off as 80s originals. I'd say go for the lester.
More versatile, will sound better, and there's just something about a lester. You can always fit one of these http://www.wammiusa.com/7200.html at a later date. Indeed, that would be really cool and would give you a unique guitar.
I don't think the block on a floyd will fit an SG boys. As to why have a single cutaway? TONE.

Or you can fit a Stetsbar.  No routing required!

I'm liking the idea of the trem on les paul, but is it locking? Does it need a locking nut?

The Kahler is of course locking (and doesn't need routing either). You can get away with a roller nut and locking tuners with a Kahler, but you will need to replace the nut one way or another (the Kahler locking nuts are pretty cool anyway http://www.wammiusa.com/5514.html )
