Someone in my office just received 2 bottles of absinthe today from a friend who returned from a vacation in France!

Personally, I hate the stuff. I just had to comment on the irony of the whole thing.

My advice would be to put anything sharp out of reach before you start drinking.  Only had it a few times, but I was seriously drunk before I had it both times.  Don't ask me what I was like after, I can't remember
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

It only takes 2 shots to inebriate you! Well that's what it was like for me, but it depends what alcohol level was ours was 80%!!!

I remember a party once from when I was a teenager (which is very odd as my short term memory has gone...errr....shall we say up in smoke since then).  This lad had a little bottle of something French that was about 80%.  I'm pretty sure it's for cooking, not for drinking as it had a kind of vinegar bottle top on it, but he removed it and drank the whole bottle in one anyway.

I saw him fall off the garden wall a little while later    Larfed my arse off.

Bugger, I feel all old now

I had a few beers and then about 2/3 of a bottle of it once (sounds a lot but I can drink a bottle of whiskey over a few hours pretty easily)

I liked it until then....

I woke up on the couch at 2pm the next day, still pretty respectably drunk and felt worse than alcohol has ever made me feel for the next several hours. I dont even normally get hangovers, but I felt dreadfull.

Never touched it since. Cant even stand the smell.

i don't know if the modern versions still have it, but absinthe was made with wormwood as an ingredient in some way, which is an hallicinogenic!  great stuff!  in bars that serve it in europe they're supposed to stamp your hand when you have a shot and they won't allow you more than two.  suppose they don't want ears all over the dance floor...

there's also some way of pouring it involving heated sugar which i can't remember, it ends up going milky.  must have a go at it, i have a bottle here somewhere...

ah, here it is!  it's Spanish, 75%, 150 proof, and mentions wormwood, hold my hand, i'm going in!!

Absinthe is great fun, and definately an excellent way to get incredibly drunk.

I like it with the sugar method,
put a sugar cube on a slottet spoon
pour absinthe over it
light it the now absinthe soaked sugarlump and allow to caramelise
then pour cold water over the (still burning) sugar lump to dissolve it
drink it down

Failing that 3 parts cold water to 1 of Absinthe then drink it ;)

Just be prepaired to lose a couple of days

Theres actually a reasionably correct article on wikipedia (wel it had to happen eventually) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe

If you want 3nd purist evil within the qorld of alcohol as try 120% proof (do not point out 120 is impossible I'm not talking by volume) Dominican rum.

The two most evil alcohol in the universe are in reverse order Carlsberg Special & Buckfast
Goodbye London !

Yes. It hurt.

Kilby, stop it, please, youre bringing back some very bad memories!!!

Though I gave up on the sugar and started drinking it neat. I figured 'why the hassle'.

Take note boys and girls,

Neat Absinthe = Pain :!:
