Looking for some insight
« on: March 27, 2007, 08:43:18 AM »
Greetings from Houston, Texas  :D. I'm currently in a debate on which pickup to get and since i've never really tried them before. It's VERY hard for me to decide, so I was hoping some of you guys could perhaps help me out on my quest to find my holy grail of a pick up.

Basically, I was looking at the Nail Bomb and Warpig. It's very hard for me to distingquish the characteristics of these pickups. I'm looking for a pickup that is very tight responsive and not too bassy and doesn't have an over kill of highs. I'm currently running a Mesa Boogie F-50 combo with a Fender Lite Ash Strat with a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge. Although I like the tone A LOT, I know theres better; And fortunately this BK pickup isn't going into my Fender  . It's going into a custom guitar; It has an Alder body with a Maple neck and Ebony fretboard. My Boogie has a very dark characteristic to it; So I like to even things out a bit with the brighter woods and works very well! So basically i'm just asking which pickup do YOU think has the "tighter" sound to it.

Hope you guys can help, thanks!!

p.s.

Sorry if I messed up on anything. I'll be up in about 3 hours to go to school

From what you describe, I think the Nailbomb is the better option of those two.  I use to have a Warpig and it's very thick sounding with a lot of bass and lower mids.  I believe the Nailbomb is more mids to higher mids focussed, but not as bright as a ceramic pickup (like the Miracle Man).

I'd go for a Nailbomb  :D

How about the Ceramic pig?

Isn't that basically a pig with a tighter low end?

I nearly mentioned that as well but thought it might not suit.  Thinking about it again though, it may be just the job...

It's not on the site, but it's a custom option.  All BKPs can be custom ordered I think e.g. you can have an overwound ceramic magnet Riff Raff if you wanted.  You just need to call BKP up and discuss your requirements with them.

Thanks a lot guys for the quick replies, so my choices seem to be the Nailbomb and the Ceramic Warpig. I do like how chunky the Warpig sounded from the clips i've heard but it DOES seem to be still a little too "open" rather then the tighter sound i've heard from the nailbomb. I wish BK could make a comparison chart like Dimarzio and Duncan have but I still appreciate the help guys  :D . Any more input would be awesome!

It's a really cool amp! I'm still in high school so money isn't on a heavy flow to me; so I bought this amp cause of the simple features and the AWESOME tone it has  :D. Great heavy sounds and I love the cleans for the Jazz/Blues/Slide stuff I like to play. I really do think this amp is under rated as a Heavy Metal type of amp (it's more praised for it's cleans which are AWESOME too, they kill any Fender amp i've played. Including the twin reverbs).
