Engl Blackmore vs 5150 mkII
« on: March 27, 2007, 08:25:17 PM »
What's the general opinion of the Engl Blackmore head over the 5150 mkII?
I'm into  tight metal riffing, but still need a useable lead tone too that's not too scooped. I normally use 5150's, but one of them has died. I had a Savage 120 for a while, but I didn't get on with it too well. Too many options I think. I dunno...help!!

I hear the Fireball is actually pretty similar sounding to the 5150. It's cheaper too  :D

HAHAHAHAH no it isnt.
Fireball has WAY more low end, its more sensitive to pickups, and is somewhat tighter.  I'd rate the fireball as more versatile.

But anyways, which 5150? the peavey or the fender? i'd still choose an ENGL over any of them.
my maxon OD 808 really DOES make poop sound good

No need to be c--ky. This is what i've heard from Harmony Central topics and sevenstring.org. Having never had the chance to properly play with a 5150 I don't know.

no worries dude.  Didnt mean to come off like that.  I know that the fireball can sound like the 5150, but theyre still different beasts.

i'd take a blackmore over a 5150 without a doubt (though they're better value in the UK). Really depends what you're after, though, and what type of tone you prefer.

Vision pedalboards. Hey I spoke with you a month or so about the G-major with my 5150 mkII's remember? but there would be a problem with switching. You mentioned the Blackmore then, that's why I want to check one out, plus one of my heads is duff. I'll drop you an email soon regarding the g-system setup.

Cool no probs mate, if you want really scooped hi gain sounds you might be better looking at the Powerball head, this has stupid amounts of gain, volume and punch. . I use a blackmore head myself . .  its loud as hell but i think could possibly be too "classic rock" from what you said on here.

No, I'm not looking for mega scooped. I need to solo with the same tone, so it needs to be a nice full tone, but ballsy. I don't need masses of gain either. Just tight on the low end. I'm using a lot of 7 string at the moment, and too much gain just kills the bottom end.

i'd have said a blackmore would be pretty good for that... i guess a 5150 wouldn't be terrible either... best bet is to try them if at all possible, I guess...

The Fireball sounds different than my 5150.

I don't know about sevenstring.org but I'd be careful about any information on Harmony Central. Just my 2c.

On the Blackmore

A guitar player I knew from another band had one. I considered buying it from him at one point. I chose not to.
Not because it's a bad amp. Not at all. It's a very good amp actually. It's just not my taste.
It has the typical ENGL voicing loved by many guitar players, which is probably a bit closer to the American than the British amp voicing. But me, I like the rough and harsher British sound. The 5150 sounds a lot like a modded Marshall and it has that aggressive and hard-hitting sound while the Blackmore is more elegant and refined. That is MY OPINION after playing them both, although it has been a long time since.

Both do metal great. Both are very tight. Both will give you scream and chugga-chugga and a ballsy sound, but they will still sound different. The 5150 rawer, the ENGL more elegant.

ENGL always reminds me of Hammerfall. If you know Hammerfall's sound, you kinda know the ENGL sound. The sound on the last two Machine Head album's remind me much more of the 5150.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

That's pretty helpfull, thanks!! I think I should stick to what I know with the 5150's. For all their faults, they do have a way of cutting thru a band mix better than most amps I have owned. I love the lead sound of these amps, I just thought I could improve on the ryhthm tone a little.

Cheers!
